Nuclear Security in 21st Century
Yesterday, John McCain outlined a new vision for nuclear security in the 21st century. McCain believes we can build a safer world, one with fewer nuclear weapons, and in which proliferation, instability, and nuclear terrorism are far less likely.
- Action is required now as the danger of nuclear proliferation grows - with North Korea and Iran as the two most pressing cases.
- As President, John McCain will establish a long-term commitment to building a world free of nuclear weapons.
John McCain's Initiatives On Nuclear Security:
- John McCain's highest priority will be to reduce the danger that nuclear weapons will ever be used. He will direct the Joint Chiefs of Staff to engage in a comprehensive review of all aspects of our nuclear strategy and policy.
- John McCain will ensure that the U.S. continues to deploy a safe and reliable nuclear deterrent, robust missile defense and superior conventional forces.
- John McCain will seek to reduce the size of our nuclear arsenal to the lowest number possible consistent with our national security and global commitments.
- John McCain will also address nuclear testing. In addition to continuing the current U.S. moratorium on testing, John McCain will work with our allies to further limit testing.
- John McCain opposes the development of new nuclear weapons unless certain specific conditions are met, including a requirement that they make possible a further decrease in the size of our nuclear arsenal.
- John McCain will work with Russia and China to achieve further cuts in nuclear arsenals, stronger action against proliferation, and steps to increase transparency and reduce threats.
- John McCain will work to strengthen existing international treaties and institutions to combat proliferation, and will work to create new ones to reduce the threat it poses.
- John McCain will support the establishment of international enrichment centers and an international spent fuel repository to prevent countries from using civilian nuclear programs as a cover for the development of nuclear weapons.
