26 CommentsOur Last Chance to Stop the Democrats’ Health Care Takeover: The Senate
This summer’s clarion call from Americans across the country opposed to the aggressive expansion of government in Washington, D.C., was obviously not heard inside the Beltway. Just as unemployment reaches double digits, Democrats push for more government takeovers. Instead of policies aimed at job creation, this past weekend Nancy Pelosi and Beltway Democrats—aloof, detached, completely averse to reality—passed legislation authorizing a government takeover of 1/6 the U.S. economy, our health care system.
With the votes to pass any bill of their choosing, Speaker Pelosi forced through a health care “reform” bill that kills jobs, strangles small business, saddles states with unfunded mandates and adds to the deficit. My research team recently highlighted each of these concerns, as outlined by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO). See for yourself: Research Brief.
The Republicans offered their own alternative, one that focuses on actual reform, brings down costs, supports small business, doesn’t strap the states with costly mandates and, according to CBO, doesn’t add to the federal deficit: Research Brief.
One of the final steps in this process is Senate passage where like the House, moderate Democrats are apprehensive supporting yet another government takeover. Unless your voice is heard moderate Democrats in the Senate will be forced to toe the party-line, as Leader Reid and Speaker Pelosi steamroll to final passage.
Now is not the time to let Nancy Pelosi and her left wing media allies propagate their plan as anything but the wrong direction for America. We have the tools to spread our message, influence the debate in Washington and start to push back.
CALL TO ACTION: Take the time to contact your Member of Congress today by calling the Senate switchboard at (202)-224-3121, and oppose any bill that increases taxes, raises premiums, kills jobs and puts bureaucrats between patients and doctors.
IMPORTANT CALL TO ACTION: Start spreading the message to your community, your workplace, or your online social network: Republicans are providing real solutions...You can help us do that by creating an account on http://our.gop.com/ and let your voice be heard loud and clear.

Under "Issues" on this website, the only one covered is National Security. Where do I find the Republican Plan? You guys need to do some significant work on this website!

Gee, Tom and David you're making so much sense. We say we're for free markets and competition yet tolerate limited or more truthfully blocked access to over 1000 insurance companies and personal participation in paying for routine medical services. Open the competition, then stand back watch the prices fall. In the past month I've heard only a couple references to these two points on national media (TV or radio). These points should be the first thing out of the mouths of the GOP leaders and our elected so-called conservative officials when they have the opportunity. Perhaps our critics are correct when they say that the GOP is protecting the fat cat health insurance companies.

Mr. Steele, I have sat and listened ... for hours on end .... the Senate debate on Healthcare on C-Span2. I am very frustrated at the fact that the Republications never bring up the fact that if Obamacare goes through tomorrow .... it would change no one's ability to immediately obtain insurance. The Dems keep talking about all these dire and sad cases ... people right on the verge of death because they have no health insurance .. and that the Republicans will be responsible for them dying. This is BULL. If those people are truly dying right at this moment ... they will have to receive a miracle to hang on for FOUR YEARS until it is available. The only thing that will happen immediately is that the citizens of this country will be bled dry financially, it will allow time for everyone's medical/insurance and drug costs to soar before anything goes into place. So many people think that as soon as this crap passes they will instantly have insurance. That is a huge LIE. People need to be educated on the time line for everything. The Republican plan address what can be done TODAY. Reforms that can be made TODAY. It can be done without bankrupting this country. The Democrats plan takes FOUR YEARS and no one gets anything for FOUR YEARS accept further and further in debt. As far as adding people to Medicare is one of the most stupid things I have heard yet. More and more doctors aren't taking Medicare patients. Thank God my mom died in January because her doctor just announced he is no longer taking medicare patients. Great... I am 56 ... and they are suggesting to give me insurance that is going broke and insurance no one wants to accept. And of course I would have to pay additional to supplement the insurance.... and who would cover that AARP. There are so many gross conflicts of interest I can't begin to list them all. Please... please stress to those in office ... especially in the Senate ... to hammer home the fact that no one will get new insurance for FOUR YEARS if this bogus plan goes through. Thanks much.

I think the Patients' Choice Act is a vast, vast, improvement over the Democrat health reform disaster, but I have a question about the November 4 letter from CBO to Mr. Boehner. The letter does state that the Republican amendment would reduce federal budget deficits by about $68 billion, and would result in about a 10% reduction in premiums. But it also states that the Republican amendment would result in an increase of only about 3 million people insured, leaving about 50 million still uninsured. Is this true? It certainly does not match the stated intention of the bill. Can this be refuted, or can the bill be improved?

PLEASE - will the GOP provide a "5-Point Common Sense Health Care Reform" plan to the media, congress, and the public. Stop playing the stall game, put a concrete, simple, and easy to understand alternative proposal out that everyone can buy into, and put Obama and his deficit-busting Dems on their heels. In case you don't have it, here it is: 1. No denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions 2. Ability to pool individuals, and buy coverage across state lines 3. Tort Reform to end lawsuit abuse 4. Voluntary cost reductions pledged by the Pharma and Health Care firms 5. A moratorium on any taxation of health care benefits Trust me, Mr. Steele, if you could message a simple, yet meaningful plan as an alternative, the GOP would take control of the debate, and set the stage for large mid-term election gains in 2010. JUST DO IT!!!

I don't see the GOP telling the American people of the $10 BILLION dollars that will go to the UNIONS, to bail out their 'mis-managed' retirement funds.. Why not? This Healthcare bill is nothing but PAYBACK to the UNIONS, Wall Street, AARP

While Chairman Steele rightly claims the connection to liberty and Lincoln. I think it is important to note that the Republicans are now also the primary defenders of the liberty that once (a very long time ago) was the basis of the Democrat party... "If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people, under the pretence of taking care of them, they must become happy." --Thomas Jefferson

I don't think anyone is "painting" the party as being a bunch of wing nuts. For the most part, our representatives are doing a fine job in committing self-destruction. So is it the Republican Party or the Conservative Party? Is it Reagan or Glenn Beck? Where is the direction? If we are going to repeat what happened in New York or continue to beat the drum provided by Rush Limbaugh, there are going to be problems. What's confusing is that the party is supposed to stand for state rights, limited government, minimal taxation and spending, and above all else, exceptional integrity. None of those things have been apparent in the party agenda for a long time, and the leaders have resorted to blame and fear instead of solutions. We're better than that. We're smarter than that. Reagan succeeded by being steady, but not sticking fingers in eyes. Well-considered solutions were offered to real problems and they worked. It just took strong leadership and a measure of patience. We should be speaking in nouns and verbs. Stick to facts. Don't just disagree with everything the dems have to say. Instead, offer an alternative solution -- any solution other than pure opposition. Just saying no and coming off as a cloud shouter will fail every time, which is why we lost the House and Senate. We can do better. The approach I'm talking about won't provide the short-term gratification of winning a shouting match, but it's what's best for the Party and the country. Those two things should not be mutualy exclusive. Tactics such as the "socialist" resolution being circulated by the RNC are just head-scratchers. Stop excluding people just because they don't believe exactly what you do and instead inspire them to move in the right direction.

Here are a two suggestions from a libertarian who wants to support the party. First, you need an alternative to the dems. bill and it needs to be under 10 pages. Anything more is just a sign of business as usual in D.C. Second, you need the republican talking heads to challenge the dems. on whether they truly plan on voting to cut medicare. Publicly hold their feet to the fire so that they either agree to take this provision out of the bill which creates a huge deficit, or they agree to make the cuts which are political suicide.
