What we are watching:
Happy Anniversary. One year ago today President Obama signed into law the $862 billion Recovery and Reinvestment Act with the promise it would immediately jump start job growth and create over 3 million jobs in two years. One year later we know that instead the economy has lost 2.8 million jobs and the only thing left to show for the stimulus is more debt. Despite the White House’s attempts to manufacturer good headlines throughout this past year and especially this week the numbers do not add up and, as recent polls show, the American people are not buying it.
RNC Chairman Michael Steele wrote about the failed stimulus in today’s Daily Caller, “Since those early heady days of the Obama administration the American people have seen behind the curtain of rhetoric and watched as millions of jobs were lost and unemployment rose into the double digits.” To read the rest of Chairman Steele’s op-ed click here.

What we are watching:
Jobs needed. President Obama heads to Maryland once again to tour a jobs training facility and give another speech. The President has been a frequent visitor to Maryland lately, each time bringing the same promises but no results.
There is a pattern developing here. RNC Chairman Michael Steele said the following regarding Senator Bayh’s intention to retire, “The fact of the matter is Senator Evan Bayh and moderate Democrats across the country are running for the hills because they sold out their constituents and don’t want to face them at the ballot box.” Read the full statement here.
The Cook Political Report moved the Indiana Senate seat to "Leans Republican" from "Leans Democrat." The Rothenberg Political Report is rating the seat a "toss-up," moving it from “narrow advantage” for Democrats.

What we are watching:
Are President Obama’s own economists admitting that the stimulus has failed? The President released his annual Economic Report today which includes a prediction of employment growth of 95,000 jobs per month and details the White House’s policy agenda to address issues such as the deficit moving forward. Now let’s break down the numbers:
Jobs Bill. Senate Democrats are scheduled to discuss jobs legislation during their weekly lunch which was moved to today because of weather.

Today from the RNC:
Send a Valentine to your favorite Republican, Democrat or Independent. This Valentine's Day, show the most important Republicans, Democrats and Independents in your life how much they mean to you by sending them a GOP Valentine's E-Card. Pass along a special message from Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi that they didn't craft this Valentine's card behind closed doors like they did with their government-run health care experiment. Or let President Obama extend your sincerest wishes to a loved one by claiming he's saved or created millions of Valentine's -- just like his party has claimed that the wasteful, pork-filled stimulus bill has created or saved thousands, 1.5 million or 2 million jobs depending on which Obama Administration official you ask.
Choose from 18 different Valentine's E-Cards that the Republican National Committee has created for this very special day. Share them with all your family and friends, especially those Democrats who need to know how you ... more

What we are watching:
Jobs bill anytime soon? The Senate Democrats had promised a jobs bill today and obviously due to the weather that will not happen. But an inability to reach a consensus within their own ranks may be the real reason the Democrats miss a self imposed deadline. Disunity is a reoccurring theme for Democrats that threatens to stall Harry Reid’s number one legislative priority.
In the news:
Democrats meet cold reality at DNC meeting. After defeats in VA, NJ and MA it seems that Democrats may finally be realizing that voters aren’t happy with their empty promises and binge spending agenda.
Writing’s on the wall, but Obama remains defiant. Democrats at the DNC winter meeting looked for ways to stay upbeat in the face of legislative and electoral defeat as the President promised to forge ahead with the same agenda items that brought them to this point in the first place.
Division begins at home. As party leader, the President addressed the DNC this past weekend, ... more

What we are watching:
U.S. unemployment. The job loss rate was released today and the President plans a trip to Maryland (again) to tout his economic plan at a small business (again). The President delivers remarks at 12:30 pm. For some context on what today’s report really means and some “what to look fors” check out this memo and short video by Former CBO Director Doug Holtz-Eakin.
Chairman Michael Steele released the following statement on today’s unemployment figures:
“Close to one year ago, President Obama and Congressional Democrats passed their $862 billion stimulus package promising it would ‘fix the economy’ and keep unemployment below 8 percent. Unfortunately, these have proven to be empty promises. More than 20,000 Americans lost their jobs in the month of January, meaning more than 2.8 million Americans have lost their jobs since the stimulus passed, and 171,000 workers became discouraged last month from seeking work. The resiliency of the American economy given ... more
