Same Trojan Horse Just Under a Different Name

Posted by: Chairman Michael Steele

Tomorrow, early Christmas Eve morning, Harry Reid plans a final vote in the Senate to pass his government-run health care bill. One of the only reasons why Reid has been able to get this far was by dropping the “public option,” thus calming the fears of moderate Democrats who couldn’t defend to their constituents this measure as a Trojan Horse for a single-payer system. (I.E. nationalizing America’s health care).

Below are passages from a piece that appeared in National Review Online  this morning, written by my close friend Kay Coles James, a former director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), discussing Reid’s new plan. Unfortunately, as Mrs. James writes, “given the statutory requirements, this arrangement seems to be a ‘public option’ in ‘private’ option disguise…”

Instead of a “public option” Reid’s new bill sets the OPM as the new proprietor for his government-run health care plan—the same Trojan Horse to a single-payer system, just under a different ... more

Since the beginning of the health care debate America has been telling the Democrats that they don’t support their government-run health care plan.  After all Reid’s backroom deals to gain the support of moderate Democrats, this week Leader Reid blunted a Republican filibuster with 60 votes, effectively ensuring passage of his government-run health care experiment before Christmas.  On this vote Senate Democrats once again have shown they just aren’t listening to your concerns.

In the coming weeks, if the bill passes the Senate, Reid must still reconcile his paired-back version with the Pelosi Plan, which is a far cry from what his fragile coalition of bought votes agreed to.  As Reid’s placated moderates begin forfeiting their gains to Speaker Pelosi in the final agreement, the internal battle among the Democrats is far from over. In fact, it’s just beginning.

As we move forward in this fight, I want to share with you several words of encouragement from a press conference I ... more

My Blog Interview With Right Wing News

Posted by: Chairman Michael Steele

I had a great time talking with John Hawkins of Right Wing News yesterday about the health care fight and the future of the Republican Party.  John's first question about health care was:

I think the question most Americans -- who aren’t political junkies -- are asking is: which people does this health care bill benefit and which people are hurt by it? They're asking, "What does it do for me? Is it a plus for me or a minus for me?" Whom would you honestly say this bill helps and whom would you honestly say this bill hurts?

Found out how I answered and read the rest of the interview over on John’s blog.

Over the past year, President Obama and his allies have engaged in out-of-control binge spending with our national credit card, and they’re not stopping.  But this past week Congress showed why it’s not just the amount spent that makes Americans’ blood boil; it’s also the Democrats’ misplaced priorities.

While they have no problem with wasteful spending and pork projects, they choose to cut funding to allow new students to participate in the successful D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, which provides $7,500 annually to low-income students to attend private schools in D.C.  Talk about misplaced priorities! This program is popular in the District and has support from Democrat Mayor Adrian Fenty as well as a majority of the liberal D.C Council. Congressional Democrats are ending the program for new students, but will fund scholarships for those students already in the program.

The House and Senate passed in the last few days an omnibus spending bill that is $1.1 trillion in ... more

Reid’s Final “Compromise”

Posted by: Chairman Michael Steele

Reid’s Final “Compromise”

The Democrats are accusing us Republicans of trying to delay their government takeover of health care.

You know what? They’re finally right.

In fact, Republicans ARE trying to stop this disastrous health care takeover. Republicans ARE trying to keep the liberals from creating yet another federal entitlement program, spending yet another trillion dollars.

Even with filibuster-proof majorities and months of arm-twisting and negotiation with moderate Democrats, Reid still can’t find the votes to pass his bill.  Harry Reid’s final “compromise” amounted to nothing more than liberals agreeing to give up a new government-run entitlement in exchange for a massive expansion of an existing one. We know they’re still pushing the same bad bill, which is nothing more than a Trojan horse for a single payer system.  It’s the same bad bill!

I am sorry, folks, it’s the same bad bill when the biggest advocate for the government-run plan, Democrat Rep. Anthony Weiner, ... more
