44 CommentsTomorrow, early Christmas Eve morning, Harry Reid plans a final vote in the Senate to pass his government-run health care bill. One of the only reasons why Reid has been able to get this far was by dropping the “public option,” thus calming the fears of moderate Democrats who couldn’t defend to their constituents this measure as a Trojan Horse for a single-payer system. (I.E. nationalizing America’s health care).
Below are passages from a piece that appeared in National Review Online this morning, written by my close friend Kay Coles James, a former director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), discussing Reid’s new plan. Unfortunately, as Mrs. James writes, “given the statutory requirements, this arrangement seems to be a ‘public option’ in ‘private’ option disguise…”
Instead of a “public option” Reid’s new bill sets the OPM as the new proprietor for his government-run health care plan—the same Trojan Horse to a single-payer system, just under a different name.
Section 1334 of Reid’s bill calls on OPM to administer a new set of “multi-state” health plans for the general public. These plans, one of which must be non-profit, would “compete” against the other private health plans in the states. But given the statutory requirements, this arrangement seems to be a “public option” in “private” option disguise. Why? Because OPM would not merely serve as the umpire overseeing competition among private health plans. It would also become a health-plan sponsor, fielding its own team of players to compete against the existing private plans in every state. That’s a very different role for OPM and the inherent conflicts are obvious…
That’s worrisome indeed. It gives political appointees at OPM the means to manipulate rules for the benefit of the government’s “own team.” As a result, OPM could crowd out the private insurance providers, forcing millions of Americans to lose or be transitioned out of their existing health coverage...
Taxpayers worried about the dangers of the proposed “public option” should be no less alarmed by the Senate’s proposed new role for OPM.

Oh, please. Enough with all this talk about closed-door racism. Let's not equate racist jokes with frank talk about race.... which influential people in this country are trying to make us feel guilty about even when it's done privately. Blacks discuss race openly... in church, in comedy clubs, in barbershops, on Oprah. And you know what? It's OK, because it's honest. Honesty in talking about race is PROductive not destructive. And do CNN readers have any idea how much Blacks discuss the issue of skin tone? Please, guys, all of you who claim that Reid is racist are just missing the point, and only serve to spread fear and hatred. And Micheal Steele, shame on you!! You're playing a cruel form of politics. Republicans aren't supposed to play this race-game nonsense.

What I want to know is does Michael Steele practice being a liar and sounding like a moron, or does it come naturally? I believe we were all forced to watch on national television while an ancient Robert Byrd was wheeled onto the floor on his sick bed, in the middle of the night, to vote on the health care bill because of the GOP. And that the Senate bill was passed on Christmas Eve morning at 7 a.m.-not in the "dark of night" as claimed by him this morning. I would appreciate a lot more honesty and integrity from my elected officials on BOTH sides of the aisle. I'd also appreciate a little more care for "the people" and a lot less care for your massive egos

The Republican legislators, and you Mr Steele, need to stop spending all your time on attacks. I am not saying that Reid's comments didn't deserve attention, but what I am advocating is adding a more important republican dialogue to the country. It is too easy to be distracted by current events, but what Americans need now, more than ever, is to see that Republicans have alternatives and good policies for a governments future. With every sound bite or interview, along with the simple decry of liberal agendas, Republicans need to show the American people that they have the answers to help our country get back to a sound economic footing. Dont let the Democrats paint our party as purely obstructionist, or negatively partisan. The time is now to start showing the centrist majority of the country that the republicans are the right choice in 2010 and beyond, the party with answers and not just the party of complaints and cries.

My comment is that, in the last couple of days, I have seen newspapers call Republicans, "extremists"; I have noted that the MSM is exaggerating division in the GOP; and the MSM is stating that the GOP is going into this election year with less cash than ever before. I don't know how they can get away with these comments. But, they seem to go on and on without any kind of accountability. Please fellow Republicans, let us act unified in this time of dire need for government reform. Please do not give the democratic party the ammunition they will most certainly use if many of us continue attacking Chariman Steele. Please, for the urgent needs of our County, let us put aside differences on the issues that are not priorities. Let us focus on those issues that will get more republicans elected in Congress in 2010. That will require gaining votes, not making us look like the "extremists" that the MSM and Democrats want us to look like. We need to prioritize our party's positions on issues that will gain votes, not lose them. It is true that most Republicans do not want to compromise on any of our core beliefs. Ok fine, we are all going to vote Republican as a given. However, if we continue to corner ourselves into positions on issues less important than National Security and fiscally responsible economic recovery, we are at great risk of not gaining the seats in Congress we need in November, First Things First. Please. Find the common denominators necessary to get voters to remove Democrats from office in November. Work on a strategy to get a popular candidate with impeccable credentials for President and Vice President in 2012. Stop wasting valuable resources (

We must do much more then just talk we need to clean up our own GOP. We must walk the walk as well there some our own members are putting in uneeded pork projects in some of the same Bills we are complaining about from congress. We must push for pork free and earmark free legislation from both houses of congress. And most important is to make sure every Bill is fully read 72 to 96 hours before any Bill comes up for a vote. This Health Care Bill is where must draw a line in the sand and say NO and our members of the House and the Senate need to Vote NO. Then bring our Case before the public to FOX NEWS and keep hammering our MESSAGE HOME to the American People. With the American People on our side we cannot lose. Also take our case to radio shows like Bill Press he is from the other side and thinks Mr Steel is afraid to come on his show.

Mr. Steele - with all due respect, please, step down and vacate your post. Your ineffectiveness has now become a hindrance to the party and we simply cannot afford the backwards momentum at this crucial time. Concentrate on your book tour, make some money - its all good but, please realize that this party has for some time been considered one of meekness and weakness - your leadership(or lack thereof) has not changed this image one bit. I'm tired of seeing you in interviews coming off as this calm, calculating persona when in fact the whole of the party is pissed off and passionate and you don't share that with us. Leave, Go, Bye...

had i been elected, i would not have bothered with health care. instead i would allow all businesses to carry their employees without balancing the books. then they could pay for their own insurances. an idea which started in 1982

What do I have to do to stop you and your committee from continuously harassing me to renew my membership and to respond to thinly disguised donation requests purporting to be surveys. I am a registered Unenrolled (Independent) voter and established my RNC membership for one and only one purpose: to support John McCain. I then watched your handlers turn the fighter I knew into an amorphous Demopublican blob leaving the United States two choices: Democrat and "Democrat Lite". Since that time I have also watched the personal e-mail contact with your office turn into an arms length, unanswered "gripe board". Finally, most of what I have heard from you and your office during your tenure is what we should not do resulting in a justifiable label as the "Party of No". One last time: I will renew my membership if and when I see demonstrated leadership from you, a cohesive positive agenda from your office that features traditional conservative views, and more than token support for viable candidates in my home state of Massachusetts. Finally, since I received no response to my prior post, I will once again ask you to proactively support Scott Brown, the first Senate candidate in over 50 years that is within a hair's breadth of defeating his Democratic opponent in a traditional Democratic stronghold. Mr. Brown has conducted a viable campaign, financed primarily by personal funds and direct donations from people like me, that has closed the gap from over 30 points to near dead even in the latest Rasmussen poll. You proclaim the possibility to end the tyranny in Washington this November. Once again I remind you that this might be accomplished 10 months earlier by actively supporting Mr. Brown.

Mike: a real good start to take back the Senate and stop this horrid socialist monstrosity, is to support like I did, Scott Brown in Mass. vs AG Martha C. I want to see the RNC come out and put this support in the media. Then, I will be glad to send in my support to the RNC for 2010. Support the conservs Mike and believe it or not, the RNC will get much more fiscal support. The GOP can win many House and Senate seats but confidence on CenterRight candidates is a necessity from our leadership.

I am an American by birth and a Christian Conservative by choice. I am among many Conservatives that are feeling abandoned by the Republican Party. If the Republican Party truly wants to re-establish itself, it had better begin at its roots and re-establish its conservative foundation. If this does not happen the Republican Party will be no more. So shape up or get out of our way.
