The Democrats’ New Message on Health Care

August 2010

Earlier this week, stories appeared in the press about the Democrats' incoherent message. When it comes to healthcare, however, it appears that's not the case. As Politico revealed yesterday, the Democrats have a new message for healthcare. Under a list of "Don'ts" from a polling presentation by respected Democratic pollsters John Anzalone, Celinda Lake and Stan Greenberg, Democrats are told don't "say the law will reduce costs and deficit."

Democrats may try to tell you that this message – the Republican message, really – is consistent with their past statements. It’s not. So, let’s go to the tape!

  • June 2010: "CBO estimates that the Act will reduce the deficit by more than $100 billion over the next ten years and more than $1 trillion in the ten years after that. That's more deficit reduction than has been enacted in over a decade" blogged Peter Orszag, former director of the Office of Management and Budget.
  • March 2010: Speaker Nancy Pelosi told us the Democrats' healthcare bill would "make it more affordable for the middle class...create 4 million jobs in the life of the bill and doing all of that by saving the taxpayer $1.3 trillion dollars."
  • September 2009: In last year's State of the Union address, President Obama declared that his healthcare plan would, "slow the growth of healthcare costs for our families, our businesses and our government."
  • May 2009: "Health System Modernization Will Reduce the Deficit," the Center for American Progress, which essentially operates as Obama's think tank, proclaimed.

Of course, the bill has not and will not do that. Republicans knew that all along. But now, after all of that huffing and puffing, it turns out the Democrats agree with us that ObamaCare will not reduce healthcare costs or the deficit. Gotta love truth in advertising!

Also, please take a moment to look at a web ad we launched this week, a fun look at the real political impact the Obama/Reid/Pelosi Agenda has had on Democrats - more and more Democratic candidates are "pulling the chute" and saying they don't want Obama's help on the campaign trail. It got a lot of pick up on tv and on blogs (including our friends at hotair.com)
