Calvin Coolidge

Calvin Coolidge

Calvin Coolidge was widely regarded as a man of few words, but when he spoke, the country listened.  A native of Vermont, he was a former Governor of Massachusetts and Vice President before he succeeded Warren Harding as President in 1923. As President, Coolidge emphasized economic development and lower taxes. A proud conservative, he battled tirelessly against deficit spending and price fixing and for free enterprise, famously declaring that “[t]he chief business of the American people is business.”

Coolidge was also at the forefront of American media, and was the first president to have his inaugural address broadcast over the radio.  In this address he spoke words that continue to resonate with conservatives across the country, saying “[t]he men and women of this country who toil are the ones who bear the cost of the Government. Every dollar that we carelessly waste means that their life will be so much the more meager.”
