Washington State GOP Chairman Kirby Wilbur:

“I just wanted to let you all know that I think with the Republican National Committee launching this first national ad buy and including Washington on the states where the ad will be seen, I think it shows that Washington is going to be a battleground state …

“The 2012 election is going to focus on the economy; I think it’ll be the number one issue… We’ve got high unemployment; we’ve got the highest number of long-term unemployed in decades. Even today’s job report showed 418,000 initial jobless claims, that’s the thirteenth week I believe over 400,000 …

“Forty percent of Americans now believe the economy is in permanent decline. That’s unacceptable because what we’re really looking at is the loss in faith in America and the American dream …

“[W]ith the debt and the taxation and the economic stagnation, I believe that we stand on the verge of being one of the first generations to actually lose the American dream …

“The issue will be the President’s policies, he’s made it worse, unemployment’s higher and even though we passed the stimulus package that he requested, he said unemployment would never exceed 8 percent, we’re at 9.1 percent. …

“[W]e got a report last week that the stimulus cost 278,000 dollars for every job created. That’s excessive, that’s high, and it shows the policy isn’t working …

“The President seems stuck on his policies, he’s not willing to reconsider, he’s not willing to change course and I think it’s time we change direction. And I think the voters in the state of Washington will know that. Last fall, they voted against higher taxes, they voted for spending controls and that message will be the message the Republican Party carries into 2012 …”
