RNC Ch. Priebus Statement on Obama’s Unprecedented Appointment of Richard Cordray to the CFPB

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus released the following statement on President Obama’s unprecedented appointment of Richard Cordray to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau:

“President Obama’s ‘recess appointment’ of Richard Cordray to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is an assault on the U.S. Constitution and an unprecedented abuse of executive power. Attempting to make a ‘recess appointment’ when the Senate is not even in recess epitomizes unaccountable Washington politics.

“According to statements by Obama’s own Justice Department, the Clinton Justice Department, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the Senate must be out of session for three days before a president can make a recess appointment. Senate Democrats have scheduled pro-forma sessions every third day until they reconvene later this month, meaning President Obama is operating well outside the bounds of standard precedent.

“Just as they did with the unconstitutional mandates of Obamacare, the Obama administration has failed to respect the authority of the U.S. Constitution. By circumventing Congress, the President has violated the fundamental principle of checks and balances. Once again, he has proven that no American law or value is sacred in his pursuit of a radical liberal agenda.”
