RNC Chairman Priebus Statement On White House’s Political Agenda To Influence Financial Markets

April 2011

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus released the following statement today regarding reports that the Obama White House leaned on Standard & Poor’s in order to delay a damaging fiscal report long enough for President Obama to give what was widely viewed as an overtly partisan speech on the budget:

“Recent reports that the White House leaned on an independent company to delay a damaging fiscal analysis and buy time for the President’s overtly partisan speech are extremely troubling.  Our American free market system operates on the assumption of openness and transparency, which is why it is so concerning that the President’s staff would interfere in an attempt to mask the damaging effect this Administration’s reckless spending has had on our economic outlook.  Between this incident and the report of an executive order politicizing the government contracting process,  it’s clear that the President’s political agenda has infiltrated the West Wing at the expense of the American people.  Rather than living up to their own self-proclaimed values of ‘openness and transparency’, the Obama White House is all politics, all the time.”
