There is a growing consensus against President Obama’s national energy tax in the Senate, and The Washington Post reports today “there is almost no hope for passage” on this job-killing bill. So why are Democrats on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee rushing through to markup Obama’s national energy tax bill tomorrow, ignoring Republican calls “to see a Congressional Budget Office score for the bill and a more thorough analysis by the Environmental Protection Agency before a vote by the committee”? 

We’re still not sure, especially after what we learned last week about the Democrat’s national energy tax.  Here are some quick highlights:

  • Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) said Americans “cannot afford the unmitigated effects of legislation.”
  • Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) said “I think at the end of the day, the people who turn the switch on at home will be disadvantaged."
  • “Cap-and-trade” author Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) admitted the bill raises energy costs.
