January 2010

That’s what President Obama told Rep. Marion Berry (D-AR), trying to convince him and other so-called “Blue Dog” Democrats to vote for his government takeover agenda, pledging to him that 2010 would look nothing like 1994. As today’s Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports:
Berry recounted meetings with White House officials, reminiscent of some during the Clinton days, where he and others urged them not to force Blue Dogs “off into that swamp” of supporting bills that would be unpopular with voters back home.
“I’ve been doing that with this White House, and they just don’t seem to give it any credibility at all,” Berry said. “They just kept telling us how good it was going to be. The president himself, when that was brought up in one group, said, ‘Well, the big difference here and in ’94 was you’ve got me.’ We’re going to see how much difference that makes now.”
President Obama and his arrogance led to Berry’s announcement today that he would retire rather than face the wrath of voters in Arkansas who are resoundingly rejecting the Democrats’ government-run health care bill. Obama also scared away the Vice President’s own son, Beau Biden, from running for Senate in Delaware.
Not only is President Obama arrogant; he’s completely misguided in believe he’s going to somehow prove more of an asset than President Clinton. According to Gallup, President Obama is the most polarizing first-year President in the survey’s history. His 65 point gap between Democrats and Republicans exceeded “the prior high of 52 points for Bill Clinton.”
Democrats should think twice about having the President campaign for them. Because after several Democrat retirements and major defeats in Virginia, New Jersey and Massachusetts, President Obama shows no signs of scaling back his agenda, and has decided to double down on his arrogance as he takes a combative tone into this Wednesday’s State of the Union address. As one Democrat operative told his Congressional clients: “Jump ship now … Obama can’t help you.”
