Some of the deficit numbers facing America are so large they are difficult to put in context.  Dollar figures in the trillions are so enormous they don’t seem real.  But if the recent debt crisis in Greece teaches us anything, it is that deficits matter and that at some point the bill for our national debt will come due.  When that day comes for America, it’s not hard to guess who will pay – the American taxpayers.

The numbers coming out of Washington are startling.  According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, the Fiscal Year 2010 deficit is projected to be a record $1.5 trillion.  President Obama’s $3.8 trillion budget for Fiscal Year 2011 will leave $8.5 trillion in additional debt over the next decade.  President Obama’s budget will lead to $20.3 trillion debt by 2020, equaling 90% of our GDP, according to the CBO.  That means for every $10 the American economy generates, President Obama would create $9 in public debt.

This debt is not imaginary.  It is real, ... more

A new report from the U.S. Commerce Department confirms what millions of Americans have known for months – since President Obama was sworn in real personal income has fallen significantly.

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis report, real personal income - excluding government payouts such as Social Security - has fallen by 3.2 percent since President Obama took office in January 2009.  While government has grown larger and larger, and Congress passed massive bailout and health care takeover legislation, the take home pay of the average American has fallen.

Last September, President Obama claimed that, "All in all, many middle-class families will see their incomes go up by about $3,000 because of the Recovery Act."  Unfortunately, the only things that have gone up are government spending and the number of new bureaucrats on the federal payroll.  Unemployment remains stagnant, the economy continues to sputter and personal income has gone down.

The President and his allies ... more

Tax Freedom Day, the day on which American taxpayers have worked enough days to pay his or her tax bill for the year, fell this year on April 9th.  According to the Tax Foundation, the average American now pays more in local, state and federal taxes every year than he or she pays for food, shelter and clothing combined.

If that news doesn’t brighten your Monday, consider that the Tax Freedom Day calculations don’t factor in paying down the federal deficit.  According to the Tax Foundation:

“If Americans were required to pay for all government spending this year, including the $1.3 trillion federal budget deficit, they would be working until May 17 before they had earned enough to pay their taxes—an additional 38 days of work.

This May 17 date for a deficit-inclusive measure is the second latest since World War II. Only in 2009 was it later, when an unprecedented budget deficit of close to $1.5 trillion produced a deficit-inclusive date of May 21, fully 43 days later than Tax ... more

Today is the twelfth anniversary of the beginning of the rest of my life.

It was twelve years ago today that I officially became cancer free and a survivor of breast cancer.  I am alive today because my family and my faith sustained me, and because I had access to the best doctors and the best health care system in the world.  I am a survivor because I had the freedom to make my own choices about which doctors to see and which treatment options to pursue.

I am just one of millions of women around America who celebrate their own anniversaries like this every year.  That’s why the health care debate was so personal for so many of us.  We are alive today to see our children and grandchildren because our health care was in our hands – not a bureaucrat’s.

Our health care system was not perfect before ObamaCare.  There were dozens of reforms that Republicans and Democrats could have worked together to enact.  Instead, the Democrats shoved a bill into law that will limit options for ... more

A common solution for the Obama Administration when they have been confronted with a problem has been simple: just raise taxes on American individuals and small businesses.

Now we see that White House economic adviser Paul Volcker at least had the courage to give voice to what the Obama White House is thinking when it comes to runaway federal spending.  According to news accounts, Volcker at an event in New York City reportedly said that “the United States should consider raising taxes to help bring deficits under control and may need to consider a European-style value-added tax.”

No one should be surprised that this is what the Democrats in control of the White House and Congress have in mind.  Their solution to falling jobs numbers was an $862 billion stimulus package paid for by borrowing from future generations of Americans.  Their solution to health care reform was to add additional billions in new taxes to small businesses to finance a government takeover of the nation’s ... more

The Obama Administration and its allies in Congress celebrated last week that a new jobs report showed 162,000 jobs were created in the past month.  Given the economy’s performance since the Democrats assumed control of the White House along with Congress, any reports of job creation are good news.  Unfortunately, these numbers don’t tell the whole story.

A large portion of those jobs (48,000) came from the Census. According to a Reuters news story, “The bulk of the census jobs, 971,000 temporary workers, is scheduled for the April-to-June period.”

The question now becomes, how will the Obama White House sell its continued failure to boost the economy and encourage job creation once the census has been counted and these temporary jobs go away?  When nearly a million of these temporary jobs come to an end in June, and tax hikes hidden in the recently enacted health care bill take effect, what answers will President Obama have for the American people?

Republicans do have those ... more
