The Pelosi Congress, continuing to play politics with our nation’s economic recovery, has set a vote for Thursday in the U.S. House to extend just a few of the Bush tax cuts set to expire at the end of December.  Despite promises of good faith negotiations from the Obama White House, Nancy Pelosi and leading House Democrats continue to push to allow hundreds of billions of dollars of tax hikes to hit just as our economy struggles to turn the corner.

Republicans in the U.S. Senate have it right.  In a letter delivered to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, each Republican Senator pledged to block any action during the lame duck session if the extension of the tax cuts and final work on the annual spending bills is not completed first.

Under the bill Pelosi will force to a vote on Thursday, more than 750,000 small businesses would see a tax increase next year.  These tax hikes would affect nearly 50 percent of small business income and 25 percent of the entire workforce.  At a time ... more

Years from now, it is likely that most people will view fewer new businesses and fewer new jobs as the chief legacy of the Pelosi Congress.  The uncertainty surrounding the impending tax hike on January 1st and the new regulations and mandates under ObamaCare have made it nearly impossible for entrepreneurs to plan for the future.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the number of companies with at least one employee fell by 100,000 – or 2% - in the year that ended March 31.  That is the second worst performance in 18 years, lagging behind only the previous year when the economy saw a 3.4% decline.

The Journal story highlighted the uncertainty that entrepreneurs and investors are dealing with under the Pelosi agenda.  “’I can't determine what the cost of providing health care for employees would be,’ says Kevin Berman, 47, who is starting a local-produce company in Orion Township, Mich., called Harvest Michigan. Starting a company ‘is harder than it was at any time I can ... more

With the clock ticking, the American people are now just 32 days from suffering a $3.9 trillion tax increase due to the refusal of congressional Democrats and the Obama White House to renew the Bush tax cuts for every American taxpayer.

According to research from the Tax Foundation, the average middle class family in the United States will see a tax hike of $1,540 on January 1st if Congress fails to act before then.  And according to the IRS, nearly half of the income generated by small businesses in America would be hit by this tax hike.

This looming tax hike is injecting uncertainty into our economy at a time when we can least afford it.  Small business owners are working hard to make ends meet.  They need to know how much the government will take in taxes next year in order to make decisions about how much to invest in infrastructure and new employees.  The foot dragging from the Pelosi Congress and the Obama White House is only serving to delay the economic recovery.

As we gather tomorrow with friends and family for a Thanksgiving feast, we all have much for which we should be thankful.

First and foremost, we should remember and keep in our prayers the brave men and women who wear our country’s uniform.  Many of them will spend their Thanksgiving Day standing a post far from home, away from their friends and families, so that we can live free in the greatest nation on Earth.  We can never thank them enough.

As Americans, we should also give thanks for the historic victories that were won this November and remember the volunteers all across the country who made those victories possible.  Over the past two years I was blessed to have the opportunity to travel the nation to meet and work with these grassroots volunteers.  Their dedication to our cause, and their faithfulness to the founding principles of our nation, are things I will never forget.  They are the reason we will enjoy a Republican majority in Congress next year, and they will give ... more

In just 38 days, if Congress continues to fail to act to renew the Bush tax cuts, each and every taxpaying American will see his or her taxes go up on New Year’s Day.  Estimates show that allowing the tax cuts to expire on December 31st will result in a $3.9 trillion tax increase

Unemployment continues to linger at nearly 10 percent.  In some states, the number of people out of work is even higher.  If there was ever a wrong time to raise taxes – this would be it.  Yet Democrats in Congress, led by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, continue to block efforts to renew the tax cuts for every American.

According to CNN, a married taxpayer making $70,000 with two kids per year will see his or her taxes go up by $2,600.   A similar taxpayer who makes $50,000 per year will see taxes go up even more, by a total of $2,900 per year.

Because the Democrat Congress has failed to act, taxpayers have no way of knowing what their total tax bill will be for the next year.  That makes it more ... more

When Congress reconvenes after Thanksgiving, it will be clear that the governing philosophies of the two parties have rarely been so different.

Despite controlling majorities in both chambers of Congress, as well as the White House, Democrats for the past year refused to pass a full budget or forward twelve of the appropriations bills that fund the government to the president for his signature.

Because they failed in this most basic function of Congress, lawmakers are scrambling now to put together a continuing resolution to fund the government into next year.  Democrats, staying true to form, want to put together a last minute omnibus bill to fund every department in the federal government through next September, while leaving many of the details up to the Obama White House.

Republicans, swept into power by an electorate that was long since tired of this kind of business as usual, have a different plan.  Republicans in both chambers are working to make sure that any continuing ... more

The Democrat leadership in the U.S. House – the same leadership that led their party to electoral ruin at the polls earlier this month – signaled this week that they will not allow a single vote to extend the Bush tax cuts for every American during the lame duck session of Congress.

President Obama and outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi have both argued that the looming tax hikes on families making more than $250,000 per year will affect fewer than 3% of American small businesses.  These numbers are either misleading and obscure the real issue.  As a pair of economists recently showed in the Wall Street Journal, 48% of the net income of small businesses goes to businesses and families that would see their taxes go up under the Obama and Pelosi plan.

Even more damaging is the fact that small businesses are responsible for between 60 and 80 percent of net job growth, and small businesses employ over half the total labor force.  Raising taxes on these job creators will reduce capital ... more

Over and over again, at town hall meetings and rallies on the National Mall, the American people asked Democrats in Congress to drop their liberal agenda and focus on getting our economy moving again.

And time and time again, the Democrats in Congress – led by Nancy Pelosi and her leadership team – refused to listen and failed to lead.

Unfortunately, they continue to fail to heed the will of the American people.  On the heels of an electoral beating not seen in a midterm election since 1938, the Democrats in the U.S. House re-elected the same leadership team that led them down the path to electoral ruin.  Despite losing more than 60 seats in the House, Democrats yesterday re-installed Nancy Pelosi as their leader and re-hired her top lieutenants to their leadership team.

Some Democrats did hear the message of the American people.  Rep. Jason Altimire (D-PA) said on Fox News last week that “It is inescapable that the message that was sent by the American people is they want a ... more

On November 17, 1800 – exactly 210 years ago to the day – Congress met for the first time in the unfinished U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

This week, Nancy Pelosi embarks on her final lame duck session of Congress as Speaker of the U.S. House.  At some point in the next few weeks, Pelosi will bang the gavel down one last time as Speaker of the House and prepare to give her chair over to the next Republican Speaker of the House.

Today, it’s worth remembering those members of Congress who walked through the Capitol doors for the first time, just as it’s worth celebrating that Nancy Pelosi will soon pass through them for the last time as Speaker of the House.

Pelosi’s tenure as Speaker has been marked by policy failures, bailouts that stimulated more debt than jobs, and more government intrusion into our lives.  Stubborn to the last, she continues to refuse to heed the voices of the American people by helping to renew the expiring tax cuts that could help create jobs and ... more
