Harry Reid, with his hold on both the Democrat majority in the U.S. Senate and his own seat slipping, said yesterday that he “had nothing to do with” the economic conditions that have led to an unemployment rate in Nevada over 14 percent.

While there are many reasons for the economic downturn, Senator Reid is certainly right that he has had nothing to do with any real efforts to try to lift America’s economy out of recession.

Instead of providing tax relief to individuals and small businesses, Reid has worked with Nancy Pelosi and President Obama to enact more than $670 billion in tax increases, almost half of which will hit middle class families.  It’s little wonder that the economy in Nevada and the United States continues to lag when Democrat leaders like Harry Reid continue to pile on billions of dollars in new tax hikes.

And instead of working to cut red tape and get government out of the way of job creation, Harry Reid worked hand in hand with Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama ... more

In a staged Labor Day event before union members yesterday, President Obama unveiled his latest plan to spur job growth in the face of stagnant unemployment.  Following the same failed blueprint of his previous $800 billion stimulus package last year, the President announced a plan to spend at least another $50 billion on infrastructure such as roads and highways.

What the President didn’t announce, but was later said by a White House aide, was that even the Democrats in the White House know that the plan won’t create any jobs until sometime in 2011.  With almost 15 million Americans out of work, and with unemployment stuck at almost 10 percent, the American people need help now, not a year from now.

Even worse is the fact that the White House rolled out this new stimulus plan without having any way to pay for it.  This has become standard operating procedure for the Obama White House, which has borrowed hundreds of billions of dollars, and raised taxes nearly as much, to pay for ... more

As Americans all over the country mark the end of summer this weekend with Labor Day celebrations, we ought to make time to remember those that the Obama Administration’s “Recovery Summer” has left behind.

On this Labor Day, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 14.9 million people in America find themselves unemployed.  The unemployment rate of 9.6 percent has shown little change since August, and many projections predict it will go even higher in the next year.

Of the nearly 15 million unemployed, 6.2 million people have been unemployed for 27 weeks, more than two years, or more.  Not counted in the unemployment numbers are about 8.9 million Americans who are working part-time for economic reasons.

These are the people that the Obama Administration has failed.  These are the people left behind despite the Obama Administration’s promises that their stimulus bill would “save or create” millions of jobs, and their borrowing of hundreds of billions of dollars to spend on ... more

In an op-ed last month in the New York Times, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner penned an op-ed headlined ‘Welcome to the Recovery.’

If this is what the Obama Administration thinks a recovery looks like, the American people shudder to think how they’d define a recession.

Time after time, the Obama Administration has put its head in the sand in response to new indications that their economic stimulus plans aren’t working.  Back in January of 2009, the President’s chief economist predicted that the $814 billion stimulus bill would keep unemployment below 8 percent.  Yet in the months since the bill was enacted, unemployment hit 10.1 percent and hasn’t dropped below 9.5 percent in the past 12 months.

On February 17, 2009, President Obama said that his recovery plan would “create or save 3.5 million jobs over the next two years.”  Yet since he signed his plan into law, almost 2.6 million jobs have been lost and there are nearly 15 million unemployed Americans looking for work.

One of the most dangerous side effects of the Obama Administration’s failed efforts to move our economy out of recession is the growing expansion of the reliance of many Americans on federal welfare programs.

According to a study conducted by USA Today, government anti-poverty programs now serve an all-time record of one in six Americans.  More than 50 million Americans are on Medicaid right now, and another 16 million are expected to be added thanks to ObamaCare in 2014.

More than 40 million Americans currently get food stamps, 4.4 million are on welfare and close to 10 million receive unemployment insurance.  Unemployment benefits are now available for up to 99 weeks – more than 8 years.

These grim numbers are the sum total of the Obama Administration’s work to boost our nation’s economy.  While the economy of India grows by about 8 percent, and even Russia’s economy grows by more than 4 percent, the American economy continues to struggle to create growth and new jobs.

When it comes to getting our economy moving again and creating jobs for American families, the difference between the two parties has never been more clear.  President Obama and his liberal allies in Congress want to raise taxes by letting the Bush tax cuts expire.  Republicans want to reduce taxes to put more money in the hands of individuals and small businesses to spend or invest as they see fit.

If Congress does nothing, as Nancy Pelosi has indicated they will do, the Bush tax cuts will expire at the end of this year and taxes will go up for millions of Americans.  According to the Detroit News, “For people who make about $28,000 before taxes, losing the cuts adds nearly $600 to their average annual tax tabs. But as incomes get larger, so would the pain: Someone making $1.1 million would pony up more than $39,000, and the lucky few making $8.4 million or more -- one-tenth of 1 percent of all taxpayers -- would fork over an extra $371,760 to Uncle Sam than they would if the tax ... more

The American public knows instinctively that the federal government’s $800 billion stimulus program has failed to get our economy moving again.  New economic data released today confirms that suspicion, as economic growth was revised down to just a 1.6 percent annual rate in the second quarter.

This stands in stark contrast to the promises that were made by President Obama and Nancy Pelosi when the stimulus package was under debate.  Instead of “saving or creating” millions of jobs, the stimulus plan has instead resulted in weak economic growth and an unemployment rate stuck around 10 percent that could go even higher

Despite these very public failures of the stimulus plan, the Obama White House continues to spin the facts in the face of reality.  Earlier this week, Vice President Joe Biden said that the administration "hit the accelerator" toward spending $5 billion under the economic stimulus law to weatherize people's homes.  Yet according to the Associated Press, “the ... more

In an interview with Time Magazine, Vice President Joe Biden said of the $787 billion Obama stimulus package, “This is a chance to do something big, man!”

He was right.  The stimulus package was an opportunity to do something big – it was a chance to get the American economy moving again and reduce taxes to create jobs.

Instead, Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama saw it as a chance to enact the liberal programs of their dreams.  Instead of tax cuts for small businesses, the American people were handed billions of dollars in new spending, sometimes in congressional districts that don’t even exist.

The White House is fond of saying that the stimulus bill saved or created 3 million jobs.  But the reality in America’s communities and hometowns tells a much different story.  According to an Associated Press poll, 65 percent of voters know someone who has lost their job.  Streets are blanketed with ‘For Sale’ signs as home sales saw their worst month to month loss in history in July.

New data from the National Association of Realtors shows that existing home sales fell by more than 27% in July, the largest one month decline in history.  Economists and the Realtor trade group blamed the fall largely on the expiration of an $8000 tax credit for purchases of new homes.  Common sense also tells us that the failed policies enacted by Democrats in Congress and the White House also played a large role in this downturn, and that reverses in the housing market are just part of a larger trend of economic stagnation the Democrats have failed to counter.

History has shown there is little doubt that tax relief spurs economic activity.  When taxpayers are empowered to save or invest more of their own money, small business grows, jobs are created and the economy expands.  Unfortunately, there is a flip side to the coin.  When taxes and spending go up, economic growth declines and the economy sheds jobs.  The record-setting one month decline in home sales due to the loss of ... more
