In just 38 days, if Congress continues to fail to act to renew the Bush tax cuts, each and every taxpaying American will see his or her taxes go up on New Year’s Day. Estimates show that allowing the tax cuts to expire on December 31st will result in a $3.9 trillion tax increase.
Unemployment continues to linger at nearly 10 percent. In some states, the number of people out of work is even higher. If there was ever a wrong time to raise taxes – this would be it. Yet Democrats in Congress, led by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, continue to block efforts to renew the tax cuts for every American.
According to CNN, a married taxpayer making $70,000 with two kids per year will see his or her taxes go up by $2,600. A similar taxpayer who makes $50,000 per year will see taxes go up even more, by a total of $2,900 per year.
Because the Democrat Congress has failed to act, taxpayers have no way of knowing what their total tax bill will be for the next year. That makes it more ... more

When Congress reconvenes after Thanksgiving, it will be clear that the governing philosophies of the two parties have rarely been so different.
Despite controlling majorities in both chambers of Congress, as well as the White House, Democrats for the past year refused to pass a full budget or forward twelve of the appropriations bills that fund the government to the president for his signature.
Because they failed in this most basic function of Congress, lawmakers are scrambling now to put together a continuing resolution to fund the government into next year. Democrats, staying true to form, want to put together a last minute omnibus bill to fund every department in the federal government through next September, while leaving many of the details up to the Obama White House.
Republicans, swept into power by an electorate that was long since tired of this kind of business as usual, have a different plan. Republicans in both chambers are working to make sure that any continuing ... more

The Democrat leadership in the U.S. House – the same leadership that led their party to electoral ruin at the polls earlier this month – signaled this week that they will not allow a single vote to extend the Bush tax cuts for every American during the lame duck session of Congress.
President Obama and outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi have both argued that the looming tax hikes on families making more than $250,000 per year will affect fewer than 3% of American small businesses. These numbers are either misleading and obscure the real issue. As a pair of economists recently showed in the Wall Street Journal, 48% of the net income of small businesses goes to businesses and families that would see their taxes go up under the Obama and Pelosi plan.
Even more damaging is the fact that small businesses are responsible for between 60 and 80 percent of net job growth, and small businesses employ over half the total labor force. Raising taxes on these job creators will reduce capital ... more

Over and over again, at town hall meetings and rallies on the National Mall, the American people asked Democrats in Congress to drop their liberal agenda and focus on getting our economy moving again.
And time and time again, the Democrats in Congress – led by Nancy Pelosi and her leadership team – refused to listen and failed to lead.
Unfortunately, they continue to fail to heed the will of the American people. On the heels of an electoral beating not seen in a midterm election since 1938, the Democrats in the U.S. House re-elected the same leadership team that led them down the path to electoral ruin. Despite losing more than 60 seats in the House, Democrats yesterday re-installed Nancy Pelosi as their leader and re-hired her top lieutenants to their leadership team.
Some Democrats did hear the message of the American people. Rep. Jason Altimire (D-PA) said on Fox News last week that “It is inescapable that the message that was sent by the American people is they want a ... more

On November 17, 1800 – exactly 210 years ago to the day – Congress met for the first time in the unfinished U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.
This week, Nancy Pelosi embarks on her final lame duck session of Congress as Speaker of the U.S. House. At some point in the next few weeks, Pelosi will bang the gavel down one last time as Speaker of the House and prepare to give her chair over to the next Republican Speaker of the House.
Today, it’s worth remembering those members of Congress who walked through the Capitol doors for the first time, just as it’s worth celebrating that Nancy Pelosi will soon pass through them for the last time as Speaker of the House.
Pelosi’s tenure as Speaker has been marked by policy failures, bailouts that stimulated more debt than jobs, and more government intrusion into our lives. Stubborn to the last, she continues to refuse to heed the voices of the American people by helping to renew the expiring tax cuts that could help create jobs and ... more

The verdict rendered by the American people on Election Day was clear – Nancy Pelosi is a failed Speaker of the U.S. House and her agenda was wrong for our country.
The judgment of the people was so loud and clear that more than 60 seats in the U.S. House swung into Republican hands, a midterm election margin of victory not seen since 1938.
Yet Nancy Pelosi has yet to take the hint. Now, even members of her own caucus are joining in as centrist Democrats are reportedly joining together in an effort to target Pelosi’s lieutenants in upcoming congressional leadership elections.
These members see clearly that it was Pelosi’s failed leadership that opened the door for the historic Republican gains two weeks ago. Instead of focusing on creating jobs, Pelosi joined with the Obama White House to spend most of the past year working to enact a federal takeover of health care by any means necessary.
And despite spending hundreds of billions of dollars, unemployment has lingered at ... more

The Obama Administration is offering more and more evidence that its federal takeover of health care is flawed to the core and failing the American people.
Last month, the federal Department of Health and Human Services granted several dozen waivers from provisions in ObamaCare to unions and large corporations who reported that the federal health bill could cause them to revoke health coverage from thousands of their employees due to cost concerns.
Now, the Obama Administration is offering more and more waivers in an effort to stem the public backlash against Medicare. Federal officials have now granted 111 different waivers to employers and unions, affecting the coverage of about 1.2 million Americans. There is little doubt that the number of waiver applications will continue to increase as employers and insurers learn more about the skyrocketing costs ObamaCare will create.
These waivers expose the deep and fundamental flaws in ObamaCare. It was shoved into law without ... more

Last week, millions of Americans exercised their right to self-government by casting their vote at their local ballot box.
We have that right because of the men and women we celebrate today – America’s veterans.
Our rights to free speech, to freedom of religion, and to vote for the leaders that best represent our values are guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution – but they were defended by the men and women who served in our nation’s armed forces. We too often forget that the freedom of the press is not defended by the media, or freedom of speech guaranteed by the politicians. We enjoy our freedoms because brave men and women stepped forward throughout our history to defend our nation and protect our liberties.
On this Veterans Day, we should all set politics aside and remember the veterans who came before – and those who continue to step forward today to defend us in Afghanistan, Iraq and around the world. We can never repay those who served, but we can – and must - honor ... more

This afternoon, recently fired Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is hosting a reception for her Democrat colleagues “honoring the accomplishments of the 111th Congress.”
That there will be awkward stares across the punch bowl as Democrats consider the historic defeat they suffered last week as a result of these “accomplishments” goes without saying.
It is also worth remembering just what the “accomplishments” of the Pelosi Congress mean for the American people.
Thanks to the failed fiscal leadership of Pelosi and the Democrats, the national debt now stands at more than $13 trillion. The American people face more than $569 billion in taxes thanks to the healthcare policies that Nancy Pelosi helped shove into law. The failed stimulus plan pushed by Pelosi and the Obama White House has left unemployment at nearly 10 percent, with almost 15 million Americans finding themselves unemployed and more than 41 million Americans receiving food stamps.
Yet in the face of this, Pelosi ... more

More and more evidence is emerging that shows that the engine that drove Republicans to an historic victory last Tuesday was the shift of women voters back to Republican candidates compared to results in 2008 and 2006.
A new story in the L.A. Times today outlines the shift in both married and unmarried women to GOP candidates in 2010 election cycle. According to the story, House Democrats won just 48% of the women’s vote, down from 55% two years ago. House Republicans, on the other hand, won 49% of the women’s vote.
This shift among female voters was driven largely by a dramatic change in the way that married women cast their ballots. The L.A. Times reports that half of all white, unmarried women voted Republican in 2010, up significantly from 39% in the two previous election cycles. Overall, married women supported GOP candidates by 54%, a sizable jump from previous years.
The reasons for this shift are clear. Women make the buying decisions in more than 75 percent of ... more
