Every 69 seconds, breast cancer claims another life somewhere in the world. Despite all of our progress – progress that has helped make sure 2.5 million breast cancer survivors are alive today – the number of mothers, sisters and daughters lost to this disease is still far too high.
Today marks the beginning of October and National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer will strike 1.3 million women this year, and claim almost 500,000 lives, making it the second largest killer of women worldwide. Nearly every American has a friend or family member affected by this disease, including me. I am grateful to say, thanks to my faith, my family and my doctors, that I have been a survivor for 12 years.
To raise awareness and support the effort against breast cancer, let’s take action by updating our Facebook and Twitter status using the hashtag #fightbreastcancer. Using this hashtag indexes your status update across the internet and will help spread the message to millions of women.
Raising awareness is critical because so many women who discover their breast cancer in the early stages join the ranks of the 2.5 million survivors. The five year survival rate of patients who discover the cancer in its early stage is 98%. The more women who become aware of the disease and ways to combat it, and the more women who schedule regular checkups and mammograms, the more survivors we will create.
Every 69 seconds, a family somewhere loses a mother, daughter, sister or wife. We can change that statistic for the better, and for good, by raising awareness that we can fight breast cancer and win. Please, join the fight today.
