‘A Very Cold Blooded Operation’

July 2010

Given the way that Nancy Pelosi has forced members of her caucus to take tough votes and break promises made to their constituents, it should be no surprise that the greatest threat to Pelosi’s continued hold on the Speaker’s gavel may be her own legislative agenda.

Forty-nine Democrat members of Congress represent districts that were carried by John McCain in the 2008 presidential election.  Of these forty-nine short term incumbents, 11 represent districts McCain carried with more than 60 percent of the vote.  In most cases, the Democrats who represent these districts promised voters fiscal discipline and reduced debt.

Instead, by following the Pelosi agenda they have delivered more debt in the past two years than was enacted in the country’s first two hundred and twenty-two years combined.  Instead of fiscal discipline, they followed Nancy Pelosi’s lead and enacted so much spending that the national debt now totals more than $13 trillion.

What’s worse for these Democrat members of Congress who hail from Republican-leaning districts, Nancy Pelosi seems not to care that her legislative agenda will push most of them from their seats.  According to a Bloomberg news story, Pelosi knows that “she may have to cut some members loose as the elections approach.”  When asked about it, Pelosi said, “It’s a very cold-blooded operation.”

Nancy Pelosi’s tenure as Speaker of the House has given the country more spending, more debt, and a health care takeover that will raise taxes  on millions of individuals and small businesses.  Her reign over her own caucus has ensured that her party will lose its majority.  Nancy Pelosis has failed her caucus, failed the country, and this November she will be sent to the backbenches because of it.
