During an interview aboard Air Force Two last week, Vice President Joe Biden said Democrats aren’t running on Democrat legislative initiatives like ObamaCare and the economic stimulus because “it’s just too hard to explain.”
In fact, the opposite is true. The failures of ObamaCare and the stimulus package were all too easy to predict, and all too easily could have been avoided.
For months, Republicans offered to work to find common ground with Democrat leaders in Congress on health care issues such as curbing Medicare fraud and preserving coverage for Americans with pre-existing conditions. Republican leaders in Congress offered to come to the White House to sit down and talk about ways to bring together a bill that would have the support of a majority of the American people.
Instead, President Obama and the Pelosi Congress ignored Republican ideas and pressed ahead with a bill on their terms. The result is a federal takeover of health care that - according to a Rasmussen poll this week - has already caused 55% of American voters to favor its repeal. The poll also showed that 73% of voters believe it is at least somewhat likely that ObamaCare will cause some companies to drop health coverage for their employees, despite President Obama’s promises that the bill would not take care away from anyone.
The failure of the economic stimulus was equally easy to predict. Instead of lowering taxes on working families and job creators, the bill increased government spending and financed that growth with new debt that will take decades to repay. That’s why a Bloomberg National Poll conducted last week showed that 52% of likely voters believe the stimulus package would weaken the economy or make no difference. An even greater number, 60%, said they disapprove of the president’s handling of the budget deficit.
The problem with the policies of the Obama White House and the Pelosi Congress is not that they are too difficult to explain. It is that they are the wrong solutions for today’s challenges. Republican candidates all across the country have new and innovative solutions to the problems we face. A new Republican majority in Congress will lower taxes to grow the economy and begin the process of repealing ObamaCare and its billions in tax hikes.
The American people are smarter than Joe Biden gives them credit for. It’s not that the people don’t understand the explanations of the Democrat agenda. It’s just that they don’t like it.
