Columbus Summit Update

February 2010

A panel discussion is underway featuring Ohio U.S. Senate candidate Rob Portman, Ohio GOP State Chairman Kevin DeWine and several other statewide GOP candidates in Ohio.  The focus of the panel is on empowering the grassroots to win elections.  Elections are won in Ohio just as they are all over the country - with friends and neighbors going door to door and making the phone calls that are necessary to win.

Earlier, RNC Political Director Gentry Collins presented data to the summit showing how far the the GOP has come nationally since election day 2008.  Across the board, but especially on economic and tax policy, Republicans have made significant gains when the public is polled on who they trust to better handle the issues.  Republicans now lead on congressional generic ballot tests and Democrats are forced to defend far more marginal seats in Congress than are Republicans.

While polling data is one thing, real election results are quite another.  And in that regard, Republicans have made huge gains.  In the past year there were four statewide elections held in the United States; Virginia governor, New Jersey governor, the Massachusetts U.S. Senate race and a statewide judicial election in Pennsylvania.  In each case, a Republican won in a state that was carried by Barack Obama in 2008.

For good reason, these results have put the political world and the chattering class on notice.  The Republican Party is right on the issues and our candidates are speaking to voters about issues that resonate.
