Exactly eight months from today, the American people will go to the polls. What we do over those next eight months will decide whether we elect a common-sense, conservative Congress or hand the Democrats another two years to try to give the government more control over our health care, our jobs and our lives.
If a day is an eternity in politics, you can imagine what can happen in eight months. Yet, the way forward for our Party is clear. The lessons we should take to guide us until Election Day are those that we learned in the months since the 2008 election.
With President Obama’s inauguration, the media and the pundits took great pleasure in declaring the Republican Party a thing of the past. The president’s approval ratings were high, and Democrats held large majorities in both houses of Congress. Unfortunately for Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and the pundits in Washington, the American people have a funny way of making their voices heard when they feel their liberties and their livelihoods are under attack.
Throughout the last year, Republicans stayed true to the principles that sustained us for decades. In the face of the Democrats’ health care plans, Republicans held firm to the belief that government is best when it is smallest and closest to the people. Against the Democrats’ push to spend almost $1 trillion on a stimulus package that has yet to stop the job losses, Republicans stood up for a fiscally conservative plan that would have done more good for a fraction of the cost. And when the Obama White House decided to publish our playbook to interrogate terrorists for all the world to see, and moved to give the 9/11 conspirators the rights of American citizens and try them on American soil, Republicans stood firm for strong national security policies that recognize peace comes through strength.
The same pollsters and pundits who were ready a year ago to declare our Party a relic now say the conditions are right for Republicans to take control of Congress in 2010. Republicans are in that position today because Republican members of Congress stood firm for our principles, and because our volunteers and activists spoke out and made their voices heard. If we continue to listen to the people, and work to give the taxpayers the leadership they deserve, the American people will elect a Republican Congress eight months from today.
