Over and over again, at town hall meetings and rallies on the National Mall, the American people asked Democrats in Congress to drop their liberal agenda and focus on getting our economy moving again.
And time and time again, the Democrats in Congress – led by Nancy Pelosi and her leadership team – refused to listen and failed to lead.
Unfortunately, they continue to fail to heed the will of the American people. On the heels of an electoral beating not seen in a midterm election since 1938, the Democrats in the U.S. House re-elected the same leadership team that led them down the path to electoral ruin. Despite losing more than 60 seats in the House, Democrats yesterday re-installed Nancy Pelosi as their leader and re-hired her top lieutenants to their leadership team.
Some Democrats did hear the message of the American people. Rep. Jason Altimire (D-PA) said on Fox News last week that “It is inescapable that the message that was sent by the American people is they want a change in direction. And a change in direction means a change in leadership.”
The ultimate check and balance in the American system is the power of the voters. Democrats in Congress may not have seen the need for a change in leadership, but the American people certainly did. Nancy Pelosi may still lead her caucus, but she no longer leads the chamber as Speaker of the House.
The reason Democrats lost the majority in Congress is because they failed to listen to the American people. They continue to refuse to learn that lesson. As long as that failure continues – and as long as Nancy Pelosi remains their leader – they will remain a minority party in the U.S. House.
