November 2010

Years from now, it is likely that most people will view fewer new businesses and fewer new jobs as the chief legacy of the Pelosi Congress. The uncertainty surrounding the impending tax hike on January 1st and the new regulations and mandates under ObamaCare have made it nearly impossible for entrepreneurs to plan for the future.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the number of companies with at least one employee fell by 100,000 – or 2% - in the year that ended March 31. That is the second worst performance in 18 years, lagging behind only the previous year when the economy saw a 3.4% decline.
The Journal story highlighted the uncertainty that entrepreneurs and investors are dealing with under the Pelosi agenda. “’I can't determine what the cost of providing health care for employees would be,’ says Kevin Berman, 47, who is starting a local-produce company in Orion Township, Mich., called Harvest Michigan. Starting a company ‘is harder than it was at any time I can remember.’”
The Pelosi Congress had the opportunity to work with Republicans before the November elections to do the right thing and enact an extension of the Bush tax cuts for every American so that job creators could at least know what their tax bill will look like for the coming year. Instead, they played politics with the issue and have brought the American people just 31 days from a crippling tax increase.
Now, with their majority in Congress coming to an end, Democrats again have the opportunity to work with Republicans to get our economy moving again. Preserving the tax cuts for every American will keep more money in the economy and boost saving, investment and job creation. If Democrats decline this last opportunity to help our economy grow, they will richly deserve the legacy of failure for which they will be remembered.
