November 2010

On November 17, 1800 – exactly 210 years ago to the day – Congress met for the first time in the unfinished U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

This week, Nancy Pelosi embarks on her final lame duck session of Congress as Speaker of the U.S. House.  At some point in the next few weeks, Pelosi will bang the gavel down one last time as Speaker of the House and prepare to give her chair over to the next Republican Speaker of the House.

Today, it’s worth remembering those members of Congress who walked through the Capitol doors for the first time, just as it’s worth celebrating that Nancy Pelosi will soon pass through them for the last time as Speaker of the House.

Pelosi’s tenure as Speaker has been marked by policy failures, bailouts that stimulated more debt than jobs, and more government intrusion into our lives.  Stubborn to the last, she continues to refuse to heed the voices of the American people by helping to renew the expiring tax cuts that could help create jobs and get our economy moving again.

Instead of using the lame duck session to work with Republicans on legislation to extend the tax relief for all Americans, Nancy Pelosi is instead focusing on holding on to what little power she has left to her.  It seems her term as Speaker will end without any lessons learned.  Instead of working to create jobs for the American people, Nancy Pelosi will go out working only on saving her own job.
