Keep Your Hands on Your Wallets

April 2010

In the past weeks, the American public was warned that the Obama Administration was looking at several new ways to tax the people to fund their initiatives.  Not content with raising taxes nearly $700 billion already, presidential advisers began floating the idea of levying a Value Added Tax on nearly every good or service purchased in the United States.

When the American people began to speak out against yet another attack on their wallets, the White House quickly backpedaled.  When asked about the proposal, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters, "I think I directly answered this the other day by saying that it wasn't something that the president had under consideration."

Unfortunately for the White House, someone forgot to tell the president this news.  According to an Associated Press article yesterday, “President Barack Obama suggested Wednesday that a new value-added tax on Americans is still on the table, seeming to show more openness to the idea than his aides have expressed in recent days.”

A Value Added Tax would have catastrophic consequences for our economy.  At a time when families are struggling to make ends meet, a tax like this would increase the costs of everything from gasoline to groceries.  The tax would pull money out of the economy and slow our growth to a crawl.

It is clear now that when President Obama is faced with deficits he doesn’t look for spending cuts – he looks for excuses to raise taxes.  The taxpayers deserve respect.  After Election Day in November, Republicans will make sure they have it.
