This afternoon, recently fired Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is hosting a reception for her Democrat colleagues “honoring the accomplishments of the 111th Congress.”
That there will be awkward stares across the punch bowl as Democrats consider the historic defeat they suffered last week as a result of these “accomplishments” goes without saying.
It is also worth remembering just what the “accomplishments” of the Pelosi Congress mean for the American people.
Thanks to the failed fiscal leadership of Pelosi and the Democrats, the national debt now stands at more than $13 trillion. The American people face more than $569 billion in taxes thanks to the healthcare policies that Nancy Pelosi helped shove into law. The failed stimulus plan pushed by Pelosi and the Obama White House has left unemployment at nearly 10 percent, with almost 15 million Americans finding themselves unemployed and more than 41 million Americans receiving food stamps.
Yet in the face of this, Pelosi steadfastly refused to renew the Bush tax cuts for every American. Thanks to her resistance to tax relief, individuals, small business owners and job creators face a crippling tax increase on January 1st. Instead of empowering the private sector to create jobs, Nancy Pelosi’s leadership put the brakes on our economic recovery.
These are the “accomplishments” that Democrats will gather to celebrate this afternoon with outgoing Speaker Pelosi – higher debt, fewer jobs and more government control over the lives of the people. Those are also the reasons that today’s reception will be one of the final events before Nancy Pelosi hands the speaker’s gavel over to a new Republican majority in Congress.
