I refuse to be a member of AARP.  If you are one of the organization’s members and care about preserving your freedom to make your own health care decisions, you should tear up your card and send it back in protest.

Throughout the debate over health care reform,   AARP has been steadfast in its support for this liberal takeover.  In a release praising passage of the House health bill in November, AARP even said that the Democrats’ legislation “protects Medicare and ensures that it will be there for today's seniors and for the future generations.” 

At the time, many senior citizens wondered how AARP could make such a patently false statement.  Democratic leaders have not been shy in saying that the bill will cut hundreds of billions in Medicare spending and more than $150 billion on Medicare Advantage plans.  These Medicare Advantage plans are relied on by millions of seniors for supplemental insurance to cover any gaps left by normal Medicare plans. 

Now we know how AARP kept a straight face when they were endorsing ObamaCare.  Getting behind the Democrats’ health care takeover could mean millions of dollars in new profits for AARP as they take over the insurance gaps left by the Democrats’ cuts to Medicare Advantage. 

The Congressional Budget Office previously estimated that cuts to Medicare Advantage plans would cause millions of seniors to lose their current plan and enroll in government-run Medicare.  While many of these individuals currently rely on Medicare Advantage plans for the extra benefits they provide to seniors, many would be forced to purchase supplemental Medigap policies should their existing Medicare Advantage plans be taken away from them. 

And who sells Medigap policies?  AARP, to the tune of more than $497 million in 2007 alone.    

A famous bank robber named Willie Sutton said he robbed banks because that’s where the money was.   AARP has learned the same lesson.  They aren’t backing ObamaCare because it will be good for its members. 

They’re doing it because that’s where the money is.
