While President Obama and the Democrats in Congress spent the past year laying plans to ram a health bill through Congress that would raise taxes on small businesses and put the brakes on our economy, millions of Americans lost their jobs and found themselves in the unemployment line. 

It is shameful that President Obama and his Democrat allies in Congress neglected jobs and the economy during their cynical push to take over this nation’s health care.  Yet there are two more lost jobs to come that all Americans will have reason to celebrate – Harry Reid’s defeat this November and a Republican takeover of the U.S. House that fires Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House. 

As the health care debate reached a crescendo this month, the newest jobs numbers were almost completely lost in the din of the Democrats’ push to pass their health bill by any means necessary.  During the last, fevered month of debate on the health bill, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), “the number of unemployed persons, at 14.9 million, was essentially unchanged, and the unemployment rate remained at 9.7 percent.”

The nearly 15 million people out of work deserved to have their representatives focused on legislation to get our economy moving again for the past year.  Instead, the Democratic leaders in Congress spent their time, largely behind closed doors, getting ready to play every procedural trick in the book. 

Also according to the BLS, “The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over) was 6.1 million in February and has been about that level since December. About 4 in 10 unemployed persons have been unemployed for 27 weeks or more.”  These numbers are startling.  While Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid fiddled on health care, America’s economy was left to burn. 

Pelosi and Reid turned their backs on America’s unemployed in order to pass their health bill.  For that reason, they both deserve to join the millions of people they neglected for the past year in the unemployment line.  To add your voice to the millions calling for a change in leadership in Congress, please visit http://www.gop.com/firepelosi/.
