With nearly 15 million Americans still unemployed, and with new data showing that nearly 1 in 7 people in our country were in poverty last year, the Democrats in control of Congress have announced they will not schedule a vote on extending the Bush tax cuts for every American and instead will adjourn at the end of this week so that Democrat members about to lose their seats can scurry home to campaign.
American taxpayers and small business owners face tremendous uncertainty over their total future tax burden. The crippling tax increases contained in ObamaCare, along with the Pelosi Congress’ failure to extend the tax cuts and prevent one of the largest tax hikes in history, is causing many small business owners and investors to take a wait and see approach when it comes to creating jobs. The Democrats’ failed economic agenda is prolonging our economic uncertainty and making the wait in the unemployment line even longer.
The last straw for the American people should be this final failure to lead by the Pelosi Congress. While unemployment lingers near 10 percent and our country’s debt burden goes ever higher, the Democrats in charge of Congress have decided to throw their hands in the air and adjourn rather than make the tough decisions that leadership requires. The Democrat Congress is more concerned about saving their own jobs than they are about staying in session to get the American people back to work.
Unfortunately for Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, no amount of last minute campaigning will cover up their economic failure or obscure the fact that Republicans have a better plan. Republicans have pledged to stop all job-killing tax hikes, allow small business owners a 20% tax deduction against income, repeal the small business tax hikes in ObamaCare and immediately cut federal spending back to pre-bailout levels. This is a common sense plan that will start the process of getting America moving again.
If the Democrats like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid were truly concerned about America’s economic situation, they would keep Congress in session and work with Republicans on an economic stimulus package that makes sense. Instead, they will shut Congress down and run home to campaign in a futile attempt to save their own jobs. The American people deserve better, and after the election of a new Republican majority this November, they will finally have a Congress more concerned about creating jobs than saving their own.
