Women Rejecting Policies of Obama, Democrats

October 2010

A story from ABC News this morning shows that women are increasingly turning away from President Obama and the Democrats and taking another look at GOP candidates this fall.

According to an ABC News poll, women are 10 points more likely to be registered as Democrats, but on the generic congressional ballot test Democrats’ lead among women is within the margin of error.  This further illustrates the trend that began in 2009 as GOP candidates made historic gains among women voters in the gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey and the special U.S. Senate election in Massachusetts.

In response, President Obama is making a last-ditch appeal to women and hosted an event last night at the White House for female business leaders.  According to the ABC News story, White House advisers are hitting the airwaves to talk about education and pay equity and Jill Biden is hosting a fundraising event billed as “an evening on Broadway.”

If ever something was too little, too late, this renewed focus by Democrats on female voters would be it.  Over the past two years, women saw Democrats try to enact a provision in ObamaCare that would have limited access to mammograms for women under age 50.  They saw Democrats push ObamaCare into law and take health care decisions away from the kitchen table and put them in the hands of government panels in Washington.  And they saw Democrats enact economic policies that grew our national debt to more than $13 trillion but left unemployment at nearly 10 percent.

Women voters are turning to GOP candidates because they offer them more than empty rhetoric.  A GOP majority in Congress will cut taxes for every American and force the government to make the same kind of belt tightening spending decisions that face every American family.  The GOP is on the right side of issues that resonate with women.  No amount of last minute posturing from Democrats can change that, or stop women from helping to power the election of a new Republican majority next month.
