I arrived in America virtually penniless and unable to speak the language. It was not an easy task, but through hard work, dedication and commitment, I overcame those obstacles. I am an American by choice and a Republican by conviction. I chose to be a Republican because it is the political party that most closely resembles the core values that my family instilled in me of faith, freedom, and family. It’s pro-life stance and preservation of the sanctity of marriage is part of my fundamental belief that the party and I share.
In my native land I witnessed how the government slowly began to infringe on the daily lives of its citizens. First by interfering in their religious beliefs, then in their private business practices, until finally the government had a say in every aspect of their lives. Soon all they were left with was communism.
Having witnessed and experienced a loss of freedom shaped my belief that the government should get out of the way of its people. This is another core tenet of the Republican ideal which I firmly believe in. Throughout its history the Republican Party has sought to encourage and celebrate economic success without penalizing its citizens and businesses. Economic freedom comes with an unspoken agreement to be fiscally responsible so as to ensure even more economic growth and stability not just for our generation, but all future generations as well. That is why I whole heartedly believe in fiscal responsibility, which is yet another core principal of the Republican Party.
Let us not forget that freedom extends far beyond our wallets and bank accounts, it trickles into the most intimate of places, our home. Part of this freedom pertains to what we are allowed to keep in our home. The Republican Party has always stood for upholding our second amendment right to bear arms allowing us to not only protect ourselves but our families as well. This is another aspect that attracted me to the Grand Ole Party. I firmly believe that we have a fundamental right to protect our private domain.
As an elected official and a Hispanic, I feel that it is important to include, educate and encourage the Latino community to participate in the political process of our nation. The Republican Party has advocated for the increased participation of the Latino community throughout the years. As a National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials’ Board Member (NALEO), I helped to ensure a path to citizenship for the Latino Community that includes protection of our borders and respecting our laws. NALEO also partnered with the 2010 CENSUS and the “Hagase Contar” (Make yourself count) campaign that encouraged participation of the Latino community. NALEO is a key component to the civic engagement of the Latino community in all general elections through its “Registrate y Ve y Vota” (register and go vote) campaign. As a NALEO board member, I am committed to ensuring the political participation of the Latino community.
While I served on the Miami-Dade County School Board I had the honor of being elected to the Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE) Steering Committee by my colleagues (urban school board members), I had the opportunity to be engaged in national educational policy. This Policy impacted our Latino urban students and provided an avenue for increased achievement and funding for their secondary and post graduate education. As a teacher, school site administrator and school board member, I found it rewarding to help Latino families achieve the American dream.
I am an American of Hispanic decent and proud to be a member of the Grand Old Party.
