Clinton Asked College (That Paid 6-Figure Speaking Fee) To Pay For Intern

- November 13, 2015

Recently, The Clinton Campaign Has Asked The Federal Election Commission If An Unpaid Intern Can Receive A Paid Stipend From Her University For Her Work On Clinton’s Campaign. “The Hillary Clinton campaign asked the Federal Election Commission if an unpaid intern could get college credit and a stipend from her university for her work on the campaign. According to paperwork filed with the FEC on Oct. 29, the DePauw University student would receive college credit as well as a grant from a summer internship grant program at the school’s Hubbard Center which offers money to students who do unpaid internships.” (Eliana Dockterman, “Hillary Clinton’s Campaign Asked If An Intern Could Get Paid By Her College,” Time, 11/3/15)

The DePauw University Unpaid Intern Would Receive A $3,000 Paid Stipend From The College Without The Work Being Designated An In-Kind Contribution. “Clinton campaign lawyers argue that the student should be permitted to accept the $3,000 stipend and the college credit without either being designated as in-kind contributions to the campaign because the university ‘did not condition the availability of the stipend upon the political nature of the internship.’” (Eliana Dockterman, “Hillary Clinton’s Campaign Asked If An Intern Could Get Paid By Her College,” Time, 11/3/15)

The Clinton’s Have Already Received Between $100,001 And $250,000 From DePauw University, Just A Fraction Of Their University-Generated Wealth

The Clinton’s Have Already Been Paid Between $100,001 And $250,000 For A Paid Speech Bill Clinton Gave At DePauw University. “The Clinton Foundation has disclosed that it received up to $26 million in payments that had not been previously disclosed, with about 20 colleges and universities on the list of organizations and institutions that paid fees for speeches by one of the Clintons —Bill, the former president; Hillary, the former U.S. senator and secretary of state; or Chelsea, their daughter.…Amount: $100,001 to $250,000…DePauw University (Bill Clinton).” (Valerie Strauss, “The List Of Colleges That Paid Big Money To The Clinton’s For Speeches,” The Washington Post, 5/22/15)

  • The Clinton’s Have Received Between $2.8 And $6.7 Million For Speaking At Colleges And Universities. “The total amount paid by the colleges and universities is between $2.8 million and $6.7 million — a range based on the way the fees are reported. For example, the top fees were reported in a range from $250,001 to $500,000.” (Valerie Strauss, “The List Of Colleges That Paid Big Money To The Clintons For Speeches,” The Washington Post, 5/22/15)

Taking Advantage Of Free Labor Has Become A Clinton Campaign Theme, Despite Clinton’s Enormous Wealth And Billionaire Fundraising Network

Clinton’s Campaign Is “Expecting” Professional Political Operatives To “Gamble Their Careers On Her Without Pay.” “Clinton’s camp has made headlines about its frugality and a hard sell on its fellowship program, which allows aspiring politicos between the ages of 18 and 24 to spend this summer as full-time campaign volunteers. The result, however, is the human-resources reality of a campaign – one scheduled to hold at least 26 fundraisers this month alone – that isn’t just taking on college students with political science degrees but expecting political veterans to gamble their careers on her without pay.” (Ben Jacobs, “Hillary Clinton’s Unpaid Intern Limbo: A Grassroots Campaign Of ‘Free Help,’” The Guardian, 6/13/15)

  • Her Campaign Employees Have Been Left With “Little Choice” But To Travel And Work As “Free Help.” “Clinton, according to her would-be employees, has left full-time organizers with little choice but to criss-cross the country and work as ‘free help.’ The Guardian has identified at least five ‘Organizing Fellows’ on Clinton’s current field team in Iowa alone who held paid positions on national political campaigns during the 2014 midterm elections.” (Ben Jacobs, “Hillary Clinton’s Unpaid Intern Limbo: A Grassroots Campaign Of ‘Free Help,’” The Guardian, 6/13/15)
