Clinton Denied FBI Investigation That Had Been Underway

- October 31, 2016

The Day The Story Broke In January 2016, Clinton Denied The FBI Investigation Into The Clinton Foundation

On January 11, 2016, It Was First Reported That The FBI Investigation Into Clinton’s Secret Server Had Expanded “By Examining Possible Overlap Of The Clinton Foundation Charity With State Department Business,” Potentially Violating Public Corruption Laws.  “The FBI is widening its investigation of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email account while she was U.S. secretary of state to determine whether any public corruption laws were violated, Fox News reported on Monday. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been looking into whether classified material was mishandled during Clinton's tenure at the State Department from 2009-2013. It will expand its probe by examining possible overlap of the Clinton Foundation charity with State Department business, Fox reported, citing three unidentified intelligence officials.” (Doina Chiacu, “FBI Expanding Investigation Of Clinton Private Email Use: Fox,” Reuters, 1/11/16)

That Same Day, When Asked About The Story, Hillary Clinton Denied An FBI Investigation Into The Clinton Foundation Saying Reporting Was “Unsourced” And “Irresponsible” With “No Basis.” QUESTION: “Uh, Fox News has a report out that the FBI is expanding its investigation and looking at possible overlap between the Clinton Foundation, your role as Secretary of State and whether there was any public corruption involved. What is your comment on that, is that story true?” CLINTON: “Absolutely not, it’s an unsourced, irresponsible claim, that has no basis and it is something that, uh, you know, really is uh, without merit and should have not any influence whatsoever in this nominating process.” QUESTION: “And to clarify, the report is without merit, you have heard no…” CLINTON: “…nothing.” QUESTION: “No, nothing from the FBI…” CLINTON: “Nothing.” QUESTION: “…investigators that they are looking into that area.” CLINTON: “No, there is nothing like that, no. I saw it as I was coming in myself, and it was quite, unexpected and unfounded.” QUESTION: “But you haven’t commented on it yet?” CLINTON: “No, I just did, I guess, didn’t I? (LAUGHTER)” QUESTION: “Have you had any contact with the FBI with any investigation?” CLINTON: “No, I mean there is, as you know there is a security inquiry going on about the you know, the classified referrals that were made to the Department of Justice, that is going on, I am certainly aware of that. It doesn’t change the fact that nothing I sent or received was classified at the time, but is has got to resolve the questions that were raised, but that is the only thing that is occurring.” (Hillary Clinton Interview, Des Moines Register Editorial Board, 1/11/16)
