Clinton Fundraises With Off-Message NRA-Friendly Gov

- April 10, 2016

At 5PM Today, Clinton Will Attend A Fundraiser Hosted By Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D-VA) At His Home In McLean, Virginia. "Please join Terry and Dorothy McAuliffe for a BBQ celebration with Hillary, Official Event, McLean Virginia" ("Please Join Terry And Dorothy McAuliffe For A BBQ Celebration With Hillary," The Sunlight Foundation's Political Party Time, Accessed 4/7/16)

The Clintons Have Been Close With McAuliffe For Decades And Have Come To Depend On His "Fundraising Prowess." "McAuliffe will rally Iowans on Saturday and Sunday in Clinton campaign offices in six cities: Council Bluffs, Sioux City, Carroll, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The swing comes about three weeks before the first-in-the-nation caucuses in Iowa on Feb. 1, followed by contests New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. Virginians go to the polls on Super Tuesday, March 1, with voters in many other states. The governor, who has been close with President Bill Clinton and the former secretary of state for decades, has lent his fundraising prowess to her campaign. He is a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and was chairman of her unsuccessful 2008 White House bid." McAuliffe Recently Worked With The NRA On Conceal And Carry Legislation, A Law Michael Bloomberg's Group Launched A Campaign Against

In February, McAuliffe Signed A Gun Package Into Law, Which "Cost Him The Support Of Some Of His Strongest Allies In The Fight For Gun Control." "Declaring the start of a 'new era,' Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) on Friday signed into law a package of gun bills, the product of a deal struck with Republican lawmakers that cost him the support of some of his strongest allies in the fight for gun control. Opponents of the compromise, including Andy Parker, the outspoken father of a television journalist who was killed in southwest Virginia, noted that McAuliffe's victory lap came on the six-month anniversary of his daughter's shooting." (Jenna Portnoy, "McAuliffe Signs Gun Control Compromise Into Law," The Washington Post , 2/26/16)

  • "The Deal Would Expand The Rights Of Concealed-Carry Handgun Permit Holders In Virginia And Around The Country…" "The deal would expand the rights of concealed-carry handgun permit holders in Virginia and around the country in exchange for tighter restrictions on domestic abusers and voluntary background checks at gun shows." (Jenna Portnoy, "McAuliffe Signs Gun Control Compromise Into Law," The Washington Post , 2/26/16)
  • Virginia Will Now "Recognize The Right To Carry Concealed Arms For Visitors From Nearly All States That Issue Concealed Handgun Permits, And Virginians With A Permit Should Be Able To Carry Weapons In Those States." "The reciprocity law reverses a bold step Attorney General Mark R. Herring (D) took in December to revoke the rights of hundreds of thousands of permit holders from 25 states with standards more relaxed than Virginia's. Now, the state will recognize the right to carry concealed arms for visitors from nearly all states that issue concealed handgun permits, and Virginians with a permit should be able to carry weapons in those states." (Jenna Portnoy, "McAuliffe Signs Gun Control Compromise Into Law," The Washington Post , 2/26/16)

NRA Lobbyist Came To The State's Capitol To "Help Structure The Deal." "The National Rifle Association, which had two lobbyists in Richmond to help structure the deal, said the new laws in Virginia could bolster its campaign for reciprocity at the federal level." (Jenna Portnoy, "McAuliffe Signs Gun Control Compromise Into Law," The Washington Post , 2/26/16)

The NRA Praised The Legislation. " The NRA praised the deal. 'The National Rifle Association commends leaders in the Commonwealth for moving forward on a bipartisan package that will benefit Virginia citizens,' said Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA-ILA, the organization's lobbying arm." (Kerry Picket, "McAuliffe Capitulates, Reverse Virginia Gun Action," The Daily Caller, 1/28/16)

McAuliffe's Gun Control Law "Enraged" Gun Control Advocates, Leaving Them Feeling Betrayed

"Gun-Control Advocates Were Enraged, Accusing The Democratic Governor Of A Betrayal…" "Yet gun-control advocates were enraged, accusing the Democratic governor of a betrayal that gives up a hard-fought victory by ending reciprocity rights for concealed-carry permit holders." (Russell Berman, "The NRA Strikes Back In Virginia," The Atlantic, 1/30/16)

  • The Virginia State Director Of The Coalition To Stop Gun Violence Penned An Op-Ed, Taking McAuliffe To Task Over The Legislation. "During this legislative session, Republican legislators and NRA lobbyists began negotiating a deal with the McAuliffe administration. Somehow, they convinced the governor that he should not only repeal Herring's decision but also allow blanket reciprocity with all 49 others states, many of which fall well short of the requirements in Virginia code. They even convinced him to allow Virginia residents who are unable to obtain a concealed handgun permit in the commonwealth to go out of state to get a permit and carry on our streets!" (Lori Haas, Op-Ed, "Haass: What's Missing From The Governor's Gun Deal?" Richmond Times Dispatch , 2/20/16)

Everytown For Gun Safety, A Group Backed By Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Launched A Social Media Campaign Against The Legislation . "Everytown for Gun Safety, a group bankrolled by the former New York mayor, poured $2 million into TV ads last fall in a failed bid to help McAuliffe's party take back the state Senate. On Wednesday, Everytown launched a social media campaign against McAuliffe, who last week stunned gun-safety advocates by announcing that he had struck a gun deal with Republican legislators and the National Rifle Association." (Laura Vozzella, "Bloomberg Gun-Safety Group Has A New Target: Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe," The Washington Post , 2/3/16)

Clinton Has Dodged Questions On McAuliffe's "Controversial" Gun Legislation

Clinton Has Been Quiet And Resisted Commenting McAuliffe's "Controversial" Gun Legislation, One That Gun Advocates Oppose. "Hillary Clinton often weighs into state issues from the closure of driver's license offices in Alabama and failure to expand Medicaid in Oklahoma to the enactment of a voter identification law in North Carolina to a decision to shift management of Medicaid to private corporations in Iowa. Just week, Clinton praised the city of Richmond, Virginia for its pilot program to equip 40 police officers with body cameras. But she has remained quiet on a controversial deal orchestrated by her surrogate and close friend, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, that gun control advocates oppose." (Anita Kumar, "Clinton Often Weighs In On State Issues. Not This One.," McClatchy, 2/16/16)

Clinton Has Tried To Attack Democrat Rival Sanders On His Gun Control Record

In A Private Meeting With New York State Legislators, Clinton Claimed That Many Of The Guns Used In Crimes In New York Come From The Senator's Home State, Vermont. "Hillary Clinton ratcheted up her attacks on Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders' gun control record Monday, telling a private gathering of state legislators near the State Capitol that many of the guns used by New York criminals come across the border from the Green Mountain State. 'She said she wants to work to get illegal guns off the street and said it's been part of her work as an elected official to strengthen laws to keep America safe. She said that it's going to be coming out in the very near future that many of the catastrophes that have taken human lives in the State of New York have been the product of guns coming over the border from Vermont,' said State Sen. Tim Kennedy, a Democrat from Buffalo." (Jimmy Vielkind, "Clinton: New York Criminals Get Guns From Vermont," Politico , 4/4/16)

Clinton Has Gone As Far As Pitting Sanders Against The Families Of Victims Of The Sandy Hook Shootings, Using "Inflammatory Rhetoric." "Armed with a blistering tabloid cover, Hillary Clinton is pitting Bernie Sanders against the parents of children murdered in Sandy Hook, part of an effort to punch her way into the critical New York primary. The inflammatory rhetoric underscores the importance of the April 19 New York contest to her campaign and the mounting frustration of Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, with the lingering primary battle." ("Hillary Clinton Hits Bernie Sanders On Gun Control, And Sharpens Attacks,"Chicago Tribune , 4/6/16)

Clinton Campaign Manager Robby Mook Claimed Sanders "Stood By The Gun Lobby Repeatedly" After They "Spent A Lot Of Money To Defeat His Opponents" In 1990, Sander's "Owed The NRA A Lot." CLINTON CAMPAIGN MANAGER ROBBY MOOK: "That is simply not true. And I don't think Senator Sanders has been sincere here in New York which is facing serious problems with guns being trafficked from Vermont and other states. He's not being sincere when he doesn't explain--is not explaining why he voted against universal background checks five times. So, I think he has a lot of explaining to do to the voters here in New York about that issue." CNN JOHN BERMAN: "What do you think he is not being sincere about, specifically?" MOOK: "Well, he is not being sincere that he stood with the gun lobby, repeatedly. They called this their number one issue--" BERMAN: "They say he's no -- he's no NRA guy, the NRA does. They say Bernie Sanders isn't with us." MOOK: "They certainly spent a lot of money to defeat his opponent in his 1990 election when he first got to congress. He owed them a lot. For his first election, and when they came to him and said our most important vote this year in the Congress is a vote for immunity from liability suits to gun manufacturers, he voted with them." BERMAN: "Robby Mook. Great to have you here. We will see you on April fourth, big CNN debate." MOOK: "Absolutely, April 4th." ( CNN's New Day, 4/5/16)

Sanders Has A D-Minus Rating From The NRA. "Sanders said he has a 'D-minus grade' from the NRA. He's accurately referring to the most recent assessment from the gun lobby group in 2012. The NRA has not issued a more recent evaluation for Sanders for the 2016 primary election." (Katie Sanders, "Bernie Sanders' NRA Report Card: D-Minus Is Most Recent Grade," PolitiFact, 1/20/16)

Gun Control Is Part Of Clinton's "Political Identity"

According To The Daily Beast's Jackie Kucinich, Gun Control Is A Part Of Clinton's "Political Identity" Stretching Back Decades. "But for Clinton, gun control has been a significant part of her political identity. She's been working to regulate the firearms industry for decades, and had a front row seat the last time a president actually managed to pass any gun-control measure." Clinton Equates Working With The NRA To "Negotiating With The Iranians Or The Communists. There Is No Possible Discussion..." And Wondered Why "We Can't Stand Up To The NRA"

MSNBC Headline: "Hillary Clinton Bucks Trend, Confronts NRA." (Steve Benen, "Hillary Clinton Bucks Trend, Confronts NRA," MSNBC, 7/10/15)

Clinton Equated Negotiating With The NRA To Negotiating With The Iranians Or The Communists. CLINTON: "You know, the NRA's position reminds me of negotiating with the Iranians or the Communists. There is no possible discussion, and it's for political purposes. You know, this is the way it works and its pretty cynical, the NRA tries to keep gun owners, the ones who are members, really upset all the time so they can keep collecting their money flowing because they tell them that they're the only thing stopping black helicopters from landing on the front yard and people's guns being seized." (Hillary Clinton, Remarks At Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, IA, 10/7/15)

Clinton At An October 2, 2015 Organizing Event: "What Is Wrong With Us That We Can't Stand Up To The NRA, And The Gun Lobby And The Gun Manufacturers They Represent." CLINTON: "And I will tell you, I am going to fight for new, effective, gun control measures. I got to tell you, it is just heartbreaking, it is sickening to me to see another massacre. People should not have to be afraid to go to college like this one, or go to the movie theater, or go to bible study. What is wrong with us that we can't stand up to the NRA, and the gun lobby and the gun manufacturers they represent. You know, this is not just tragic; you don't just need to pray for people, we need to act. And we need to build a movement. It's infuriating, every time there's another massacre, Republicans and the NRA say, 'now is not the time to talk about guns.' Yes it is. But more than talk, it is time to act." (Hillary Clinton, Remarks At Broward College, Davie, FL, 10/2/15)

During A 2014 Town Hall, Clinton Said The NRA And Gun Advocates "Hold A View Point That Terrorizes" Americans. CLINTON: "I don't think any parent, any person should have to fear about their child going to school or going to college because someone, for whatever reason, psychological, emotional, political, ideological, whatever it means, could possibly enter that school property with an automatic weapon and murder innocent children, students, teachers. I'm well aware that this is a hot political subject and again I will speak out no matter what role I find myself in, but I believe that we need a more thoughtful conversation, we cannot let a minority of people, and that's what it is, it is a minority of people, hold a view point that terrorizes a majority of people." (MSNBC's The Last Word With Lawrence O'Donnell, 6/8/14)

On March 21, Jeff Forbes Hosted A Fundraiser For Clinton In Washington, D.C. "Lunch with John Podesta, Campaign Chair, Official Event, Washington, District of Columbia, Hosted By Susan Brophy, Ann Castagnetti, David Castagnetti, Steve Elmendorff, Jeff Forbes, And Joel Johnson." ("Lunch With John Podesta," The Sunlight Foundation's Political Party Time, Accessed 3/1/16)

Forbes Was A Lobbyist For The NRA From 2009 Until The End Of 2015. "Forbes, a former chief of staff to former Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), was registered as a lobbyist for the NRA Institute from 2009 until the end of 2015 on issues such as protecting Second Amendment rights, and regulation and gun control, according to lobbying disclosures." (Paul Blumenthal, "Hillary Clinton To Raise Money From Ex-NRA Lobbyist," Huffington Post, 3/1/16)

Forbes Contributed $2,700 To Clinton's Campaign In Last April When He Was Still Lobbying Against Gun Control. "He donated $2,700 to the Clinton campaign in April when he was still registered to lobby against gun control. In addition, a colleague at his Forbes-Tate lobbying shop, Elizabeth Greer, also donated $2,700 while registered to lobby for the NRA."
