Clinton Gives Up On Swaying Young Voters, Decides To Insult Them Instead

- April 6, 2016

In A Dramatic Shift Of Tone, Team Clinton Has Now Decided To Go After Young Democrats Instead Of Trying To Woo Them

This Morning, Clinton Brushed Aside Sanders Young Supporters By Saying "It's Exciting To Be, In Effect, Protesting." MSNBC'S MIKA BRZEZINSKI: "When you look at the young women and the young people who are all going toward Bernie how do you attract them and why haven't you been able to so far? Because you have been saying, you have had a message that would resonate with them." CLINTON: "Look I think it's exciting to be in effect protesting. I remember. I did that a long time ago when I was in my twenties and I totally get the attraction of this." (MSNBC's " Morning Joe," 4/6/17)

MSNBC's Savannah Guthrie Called Out Clinton Campaign Spokesman Brian Fallon For The Clinton Campaign's "Condescending" Perception Of Young Voters. MSNBC'S CHUCK TODD: "Let me start with the question that Kasie Hunt set up which is your candidate said - Secretary Clinton said - when I was younger, protests were fun. So, is she being protested?" CLINTON SPOKESMAN BRIAN FALLON: "No." TODD: "Is that how you view this under 30 crowd is with Bernie out of a protest against Hillary Clinton?" FALLON: "No, I think that's a misinterpretation of what she said. I think if you look at the breakdown of demographics right now, I bet a lot of the young people showing up to support Senator Sanders, their parents are probably voting for Hillary Clinton. But look over the long term--" MSNBC'S SAVANNAH GUTHRIE: "Isn't that a little bit of condescending? Oh, it makes it seem like they're just rebelling, those crazy kids." (MSNBC's "The Rundown," 4/6/16)

"According to Democrats close to Hillary and former President Bill Clinton, both are frustrated by Sanders' ability to cast himself as above politics-as-usual even while firing off what they consider to be misleading attacks. The Clintons are even more annoyed that Sanders' approach seems to be rallying - and keeping - young voters by his side." (Lisa Lerer And Ken Thomas, "Clinton's Frustration Grows, As Primary Race Continues," The Associated Press , 4/4/16)

The "Energetic Youth" Is Splitting The Democrat Party By Supporting Sanders. "While the party is also split by age, with energetic youth feeling the Bern, and elders espousing their support for the former first lady." (Nick Fouriezos, "Can This Hillary Insider Woo Bernie's Backers?" OZY, 3/23/16)

Clinton Has Completely Failed To Gain Support Among Young Voters During The Primaries

CNN's Jeff Zeleny Said The "Biggest Worrying Segment Of The Electorate" For Clinton Is "Young Voters." CNN'S JEFF ZELENY: "Bernie Sanders won across the board, mainly young voters but also independent voters. That is the biggest worrying segment of the electorate the Clinton campaign has not been able to reach out to. Now, as for Hillary Clinton she did not have an event at all. She was actually at a fundraiser last night in the Bronx." (CNN's "New Day," 4/6/17)

Clinton "Can't Fire Up Young Voters…" "Bernie Sanders may be a dead ringer for Larry David, but Hillary is running the 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' campaign. She can't fire up young voters by dwelling on what can't be done in Washington and by explaining that she's more prose than poetry." (Maureen Dowd, "Hillary Battles Bernie Sanders, Chick Magnet," The New York Times , 2/6/16)

Sanders Is "Routinely Whopping [Clinton] Among Young Voters." " The comments from Clinton likely offer a preview of what's to come in the two weeks before the April 19 New York primary. Clinton and her aides are signaling that they intend to go on the attack against Sanders, who is raising more money for Clinton and routinely whopping her among young voters." (Amie Parnes, "Clinton Shifts Media Tactics To Take On Sanders, Trump," The Hill, 4/6/16)

Sanders' "Overwhelming Support" Among Younger Voters Is "The Biggest Challenge Confronting Clinton's Campaign…" "The overwhelming support for Sanders -- a disheveled 74-year-old who has spent two decades in Congress -- among younger voters is perhaps the biggest challenge confronting Clinton's campaign in the Democratic nominating contest." (Dan Merica And Eric Bradner, "Young Voters Abandon Hillary Clinton For Bernie Sanders," CNN, 2/10/16)

Sanders' "Message Connects With Younger People" While They "Seem Less Interested In Clinton's Pitch…" "His message connects with younger people. They seem less interested in Clinton's pitch as a 'progressive who gets things done' than in Sanders' call to break up big financial institutions and expand social programs as part of a 'political revolution.'" (Catherine Lucey, "Clinton's New Hampshire Challenge: Winning Trust," The Associated Press, 2/6/16)
