Clinton Once Touted Her Experience With Guns And Courted Gun Owners

- October 11, 2015

Clinton Recently Called For More Gun Control Reforms On The Campaign Trail. CLINTON: “And I will tell you, I am going to fight for new, effective, gun control measures. I got to tell you, it is just heartbreaking, it is sickening to me to see another massacre. People should not have to be afraid to go to college like this one, or go to the movie theater, or go to bible study. What is wrong with us that we can’t stand up to the NRA, and the gun lobby and the gun manufacturers they represent. You know, this is not just tragic; you don’t just need to pray for people, we need to act. And we need to build a movement. It’s infuriating, every time there’s another massacre, Republicans and the NRA say, ‘now is not the time to talk about guns.’ Yes it is. But more than talk, it is time to act.” (Hillary Clinton, Remarks At Broward College, Davie, FL, 10/2/15)

  • Clinton Recently Unveiled A Four-Part Gun Control Reform Agenda. “Hillary Clinton plans to lay out a series of measures that would tighten regulations on gun sales through a combination of legislation and the use of executive power, in the wake of the shootings at an Oregon community college, a Clinton aide said. Mrs. Clinton was expected to lay out her agenda at a pair of town hall meetings in New Hampshire on Monday, a sign that gun control has become less politically toxic for Democrats than it once was.” (Laura Meckler, “Hillary Clinton’s Gun-Control Proposals To Include Executive Action,” The Wall Street Journal, 10/5/15)

In 2008, Clinton Called Obama’s Comments That “People In Our Country Cling To Guns,” And “Elitist And Out Of Touch.” “For the third time since Mr. Obama’s remarks were made public Friday night, Mrs. Clinton criticized him at length, saying his comments seemed ‘kind of elitist and out of touch.’ ‘I disagree with Senator Obama’s assertion that people in our country cling to guns and have certain attitudes about immigration or trade simply out of frustration,’ she said.” (Julie Bosman, “Clinton Portrays Herself As A Pro-Gun Churchgoer,” The New York Times, 4/12/08)

  • The New York Times’ Headline: “Clinton Portrays Herself As A Pro-Gun Churchgoer” (Julie Bosman, “Clinton Portrays Herself As A Pro-Gun Churchgoer,” The New York Times, 4/12/08)

Clinton Called Herself A Pro-Gun Churchgoer And Said Her Faith Was “The Faith Of [Her] Parents And [Her] Grandparents.” “She described herself as a pro-gun churchgoer, recalling that her father taught her how to shoot a gun when she was a young girl and said that her faith ‘is the faith of my parents and my grandparents.’” (Julie Bosman, “Clinton Portrays Herself As A Pro-Gun Churchgoer,” The New York Times, 4/12/08)

Clinton Said There Was “‘Not A Contradiction Between Protecting Second Amendment Rights’ And An Effort To Reduce Crime.” “Minutes later, in a slightly awkward moment, Clinton faced a question from a woman in the audience whose son had been paralyzed by a gunshot. The woman asked Clinton what she would do about gun control as president. Clinton touted her husband’s record on gun control during his administration, and said ‘there is not a contradiction between protecting Second Amendment rights’ and the effort to reduce crime. Noting that many hunters and gun collectors want to keep weapons out of the hands of criminals, Clinton referred to her positive childhood experiences with firearms. ‘As I told you, my dad taught me how to shoot behind our cottage,’ she said. ‘I have gone hunting. I am not a hunter. But I have gone hunting.’ Clinton said she has hunted ducks.” (Peter Hamby, “Clinton Touts Her Experience With Guns,” CNN, 4/12/08)
