- December 10, 2015

Behind Closed Doors, Clinton Pledged To The VA’s Union That She Would Fight Against Reforming The Agency Under Fire For Corruption And Mishandling Veterans’ Care

Today, The Association Of Federal Government Employees Endorsed Clinton For President. (Press Release, "Why AFGE Is Supporting Hillary Clinton For President Of The United States," Association Of Federal Government Employees, 12/10/15)

According To The AFGE Endorsement, "Clinton Also Assured AFGE That She Won't Let The Department Of Veteran Affairs Be Exploited To Satisfy A Political Agenda." "Secretary Clinton told AFGE leaders at a recent presidential forum 'I believe in the right to organize and bargain collectively. I think we've lost track of what it takes to balance the economy so it works for everyone. Workers need to be at the table.' Clinton also assured AFGE that she won't let the Department of Veterans Affairs be exploited to satisfy a political agenda. She wants to make sure our correctional officers and TSA officers are safe on the job, and SSA employees can continue to serve Americans at community offices and elsewhere." • AFGE Endorsement: "While Many Candidates Have Used Government Employees As Political Punching Bags, Clinton Has Stood Up For Employees At The VA And Other Agencies." " While many candidates have used government employees as political punching bags, Clinton has stood up for employees at the VA and other agencies. While other candidates are trying to raid your pay, Clinton wants to protect it - and give you a fair raise." • The AGFE Endorsement Featured An Assurance That Clinton Would Provide VA Employees A "Fair Raise." " While many candidates have used government employees as political punching bags, Clinton has stood up for employees at the VA and other agencies. While other candidates are trying to raid your pay, Clinton wants to protect it - and give you a fair raise." However As Recently As Yesterday, Clinton Publicly Said The Exact Opposite On The Campaign Trail With Voters

Just Yesterday, Clinton Vowed To Fix The VA: "I Will Do Anything To Clear Out People Who Are Not Performing The Way That They Should On Behalf Of Our Veterans." "I Will Do Anything To Clear Out People Who Are Not Performing On Behalf Of Our Veterans." CLINTON: "I think we've got to fix the VA and we've got to make sure it works and hold it accountable not just every couple of years but literally every day, every week. That's something, I will ask for a report every week about what the wait times are, what is happening in the VA system. And I will do anything to clear out people who are not performing the way that they should on behalf of our veterans." (Hillary Clinton, Remarks, Urbandale, IA, 12/9/15)

Clinton’s Assurances To The Union Shouldn’t Come As A Surprise Considering Her October Claim That VA Problems Were Not “Widespread”

In An October Interview, Clinton Said The VA Scandal Has "Not Been As Widespread As It Has Been Made Out To Be ." CLINTON: "Yeah, and I don't understand that. You know, I don't understand why we have such a problem, because there have been a number of surveys of veterans, and overall, veterans who do get treated are satisfied with their treatment. Now…" MADDOW: "Much more so than people in the regular system." CLINTON: "That's exactly right." MADDOW: "Yeah. Right." CLINTON: "Now, nobody would believe that from the coverage that you see, and the constant berating of the VA that comes from the Republicans, in part in pursuit of this ideological agenda that they have." MADDOW: "But in part because there has been real scandal." CLINTON: "There has been. And - but it's not been as widespread as it has been made out to be." (MSNBC's " The Rachel Maddow Show," 10/23/15)

  • Clinton Accused Republicans Of "Constant Berating Of The V.A. That Comes From The Republicans, In Part In Pursuit Of This Ideological Agenda…" CLINTON: "Now, nobody would believe that from the coverage that you see, and the constant berating of the V.A. that comes from the Republicans, in part in pursuit of this ideological agenda that they have." Through A Spokesman, Clinton Refused To Apologize For Her Remarks. "'Republicans are trying to suggest the only solution to the VA's problems is to privatize it, but Hillary Clinton will not apologize for insisting on doing the hard work to reform the VA, rather than ending it altogether,' [Clinton campaign Press Secretary Brian] Fallon said."
