Clinton Takes Enviro Endorsement, But Couldn't Hear Complaints On Her LEAR Jet

- November 11, 2015

Earlier This Week, Clinton Won The Endorsement Of Liberal Environmental Group, The League Of Conservation Voters (LCV)

The League Of Conservation Voters Has Endorsed Clinton For President. "The League of Conservation Voters Action Fund on Monday intends to endorse Hillary Rodham Clinton, the first time in three decades it has endorsed a presidential candidate before a single primary vote has been cast." (Juliet Eilperin, "League Of Conservation Voters Action Fund To Endorses Clinton," The Washington Post , 11/8/15)

The Endorsement Has Riled The Environmental Community As Many Believe Clinton Has Not Been Extreme Enough On Their Issues.

Many Of The League Of Conservation Members Have Caused A Stir Over The Early Endorsement Of Clinton Over Sanders. "The League of Conservation Voters Action Fund's endorsement of Hillary Rodham Clinton Monday has prompted a backlash from many of its members, who argue Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) deserved the nod." (Juliet Eilperin, "Green Group Endorses Hillary Clinton, And Feels The Bern," The Washington Post , 11/9/15)

Since The Endorsement Was Announced Complaints Have Flooded Into The League Of Conservation Voters Facebook Page, Disparaging The Pick. "Complaints flooded the Facebook page of the LCV Action Fund after the endorsement was announced Monday - the earliest ever for the influential green group and the first time it has chosen a candidate before any primary votes were actually cast. Sanders, who has made fighting climate change one of his signature issues, along with income inequality, has a lifetime voting score of 95 from the LCV. Clinton's rating is 82. 'What an embarrassment! No organization which is serious about environmental progress would endorse HRC over Senator Sanders,' one commenter wrote." (Michael Walsh, "LCV Responds To Green Backlash After Endorsing Clinton Over Sanders: 'It's Not About Him. It's About Her,'" Yahoo! Politics, 11/11/15)

  • "Others Vowed To Stop Donating Money To The Organization Altogether." "Others vowed to stop donating money to the organization altogether. They variously cited Clinton's votes for offshore oil drilling in the Senate, her support for hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, domestically and overseas as secretary of state and her refusal for many months to publicly take a stand on the polarizing Keystone XL oil pipeline. (She ultimately came out in September against the pipeline, which President Obama vetoed on Friday.)" (Michael Walsh, "LCV Responds To Green Backlash After Endorsing Clinton Over Sanders: 'It's Not About Him. It's About Her,'" Yahoo! Politics, 11/11/15)

The Sanders Campaign Has "Cried Foul" Over The Endorsement, Claiming It Is "Based On Something Other Than The Merits"

Sanders' Campaign Has "Cried Foul" Over The League Of Conservation Voters' Endorsement Of Clinton. "A top aide to Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign cried foul Monday after the League of Conservation Voters endorsed Hillary Clinton, despite her much lower score on the group's lifetime legislative scorecard." (Evan McMorris-Santoro, "Sanders Camp: Leading Green Group Ignored Its Own Scorecard When Endorsing Clinton," Buzzfeed , 11/9/15)

Clinton's LCV Scorecard Was Lower Than Sanders, Which Has Generated Much Angst Within The Sanders Campaign. "Clinton has taken hits for being slow to oppose the Keystone XL pipeline and for what National Journal refers to as 'a mixed record on environmental and energy issues.' LCV maintains a well-regarded scorecard that rates members of Congress based on their voting records. Clinton's lifetime score is 82 percent, while Sanders's score is 95 percent." (John Nichols, "Hillary Clinton Lands A Key Endorsement From The League Of Conservation Voters," The Nation, 11/9/15)

  • The Sanders Campaign Said The "Endorsement Is Based On Something Other Than The Merits." "The Sanders campaign questioned the endorsement of Clinton, given the competing scores. 'He has a 95% lifetime score from the League of Conservation Voters,' Sanders' top communications aide, Michael Briggs, told reporters in a statement. 'The league agreed with former Sen. Clinton only 82% of the time, so its endorsement is based on something other than the merits.'" (Evan McMorris-Santoro, "Sanders Camp: Leading Green Group Ignored Its Own Scorecard When Endorsing Clinton," Buzzfeed , 11/9/15)

Backers Of Sanders Have Since "Vowed To Withhold Future Donations To LCV In Retaliation For The Move." "Backers of Sanders posted a slew of comments on Facebook and Twitter, suggesting that the League of Conservation Voters' federal political action committee had made a politically expedient choice. They noted that Clinton did not come out against the contentious Keystone XL pipeline, which Obama vetoed Friday, until September, while her rivals were early opponents. Several vowed to withhold future donations to LCV in retaliation for the move and either give the money to other environmental groups, or Sanders himself." (Juliet Eilperin, "Green Group Endorses Hillary Clinton, And Feels The Bern," The Washington Post , 11/9/15)

Meanwhile Clinton Flies Luxuriously In Her "Carbon-Spewing" Private Lear Jet

Clinton Left A New Hampshire Campaign Event On A Private Jet, A Day After Receiving A "Powerful Environmental Group's Endorsement." "Hillary Clinton left New Hampshire campaign Tuesday night after receiving a powerful environmental group's endorsement, boarding a private plane that emits more than two tons of carbon for every hour it's in the air." (David Martosko, "EXCLUSIVE: Hillary Hops On Carbon-Spewing Private Learjet After Winning Endorsement From Environmental Group That Says Fighting Global Warming Is Its 'Top Priority,'" The Daily Mail , 11/11/15)

Clinton’s One Percent Travel Arrangements Leave A Hefty Carbon Footprint For The Green Candidate. “The $13.3 million Learjet 60 cruises at a top speed of 525 miles per hour, according to Jet Advisors, a firm that counsels America's 1 per cent on aircraft purchases. It also consumes 203 gallons of jet fuel for every hour it spends with its twin engines running. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, burning a gallon of jet fuel produces 21.1 pounds of carbon dioxide. That puts the Learjet 60's hourly carbon footprint at 4,283 pounds – more than 2 tons.” (David Martosko, “EXCLUSIVE: Hillary Hops On Carbon-Spewing Private Learjet After Winning Endorsement From Environmental Group That Says Fighting Global Warming Is Its ‘Top Priority,’” The Daily Mail, 11/11/15)
