Clinton Virginia Leader, Like Candidate, Under FBI Investigation

- March 17, 2016

Today, A Grand Jury Approved An Investigation Into Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones (D-VA). " It sure sounded like big news Wednesday when we learned that a grand jury okayed a Virginia State Police investigation into any possible illegal overlap between construction at Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones' new satellite church in Chesterfield County, any members of the mayor's staff, any city workers or the mayor himself." (Mark Holmberg, "Holmberg: Richmond Mayor Faces Broader, More Intense Investigation," WTVR, 3/17/16)

  • The FBI Has Also Joined The Investigation, "Which Takes It To A Whole Different Level." "The Richmond Times-Dispatch is reporting the FBI has joined the investigation, which takes it to a whole different level. That means knees will be knocking and increases the likelihood that city workers will talk to avoid federal trouble. And remember, there are several members of the mayor's senior staff who are also part of his church." (Mark Holmberg, "Holmberg: Richmond Mayor Faces Broader, More Intense Investigation," WTVR, 3/17/16)

The Probe Is Looking Into Connections Between The City Government And Jones' Church. "Virginia State Police have received grand jury approval to investigate Mayor Dwight C. Jones in the ongoing probe into the connection between Jones' church and city government, Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney Michael N. Herring said Wednesday. The FBI is also participating in the investigation, which until recently has been characterized as a joint effort between the state police, Herring's office and the city auditor's office, according to sources with knowledge of the investigation." (Ned Oliver and K. Burnell Evans, "Grand Jury Oks Va. State Police Investigation Of Mayor Jones; FBI Also Participating," Richmond Times-Dispatch, 3/16/16)

The Investigation Began After "A City Auditor's Report That Found The Director Of Public Works, Emmanuel Adediran, Was Overseeing A Church Construction Project On City Time." "Herring said the decision to seek authorization for an investigation into Jones is 'part of the process' initiated when the mayor requested in January that state police review a city auditor's report that found the director of public works, Emmanuel Adediran, was overseeing a church construction project on city time." (Ned Oliver and K. Burnell Evans, "Grand Jury Oks Va. State Police Investigation Of Mayor Jones; FBI Also Participating," Richmond Times-Dispatch, 3/16/16)

  • Emails "Showed Jones Was Copied On Numerous Emails Sent By Adediran During Working Hours About The Project At First Baptist Church Of South Richmond, Where The Mayor Is Senior Pastor." "Emails obtained by the Richmond Times-Dispatch showed Jones was copied on numerous emails sent by Adediran during working hours about the project at First Baptist Church of South Richmond, where the mayor is senior pastor. The emails also included quotes from contractors for church purchases that listed the city of Richmond as the billing recipient." (Ned Oliver and K. Burnell Evans, "Grand Jury Oks Va. State Police Investigation Of Mayor Jones; FBI Also Participating," Richmond Times-Dispatch, 3/16/16)

Clinton, Who Is Also Under An FBI Investigation, Appointed Jones To Her Campaign's Virginia Leadership Team

In 2015, Jones Was Appointed To The Clinton Campaign's Virginia Leadership Team. "The Clinton campaign announced Monday that its 'Hillary for Virginia Leadership Council' will include the governor, the state's entire Democratic congressional delegation, Lt. Gov. Ralph S. Northam, Attorney General Mark R. Herring and Susan Swecker, the chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Virginia. …Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones, Swecker's predecessor as state party chair, was also on the list." (Graham Moomaw, "Hillary Clinton Names Leadership Team For Virginia Campaign," Richmond Times Dispatch, 10/5/15)

In February, The FBI Confirmed That The Investigation Into Clinton's Secret Server Is Ongoing. "The FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's email server remained 'ongoing' as of earlier this month, a top FBI official said in a letter filed in federal court Monday." (Josh Gerstein, "FBI: Clinton Email Probe 'Ongoing,'" Politico, 2/8/16)

Will Jones Meet The Same Fate As Some Of Clinton's Other Disgraced Virginia Leadership?

In November 2015, Democrat Roanoke Mayor David Bowers Was Removed From Clinton's Virginia Leadership Team After He Cited WWII Japanese Internment As Reason For Blocking Syrian Refugees From Entering His City. "Roanoke mayor David Bowers has been taken off Hillary Clinton's Virginia leadership council, a campaign spokesperson confirmed to ABC News, following remarks in which he cited the Japanese internment during WWII as reason to stem Syrian refugee resettlement in his city. Bowers had been a member of Clinton's Virginia leadership council since early October. In a statement released on Wednesday, the Democratic mayor used President Franklin D. Roosevelt's detention of Japanese-Americans during World War II to defend his position."
