Clinton's Clean Energy Fundraising Hypocrisy

- February 22, 2016

Today, Hillary Clinton's Campaign Chair, John Podesta, Is Hosting A "Clean Energy And The Clean Economy" Fundraiser In Washington, D.C. "Mon, Feb. 22, 2016, 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM, Conversation on Clean Energy and the Clean Economy with John Podesta, Campaign Chair, Official Event, Washington, District of Columbia." ("On Clean Energy And The Clean Economy With John Podesta, Campaign Chair," The Sunlight Foundation's Political Party Time , Accessed 2/19/16)

WHILE FUNDRAISING ON A "CLEAN ENERGY AND THE CLEAN ECONOMY," CLINTON HAS BROKEN HER OWN PLEDGE TO RUN A CARBON NEUTRAL CAMPAIGN

The Clinton Campaign Pledged To Go Carbon Neutral Only After Being Attacked For Its Use Of Private Jets

After Clinton Caught Flak For Taking A Private Jet In July 2015, Her Campaign Pledged To Go "Carbon Neutral." "Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign will go carbon neutral, a campaign aide said Tuesday in response to video from a Republican opposition research firm that showed the Democratic frontrunner boarding a private plane after outlining part of her climate change platform in Iowa. 'This campaign will be carbon neutral,' the aide said Tuesday morning. 'We'll be offsetting the carbon footprint of the campaign and that includes travel.'" (Dan Merica, "First On CNN: Clinton Campaign Pledges To Be Carbon Neutral, Aide Says," CNN, 7/8/15)

  • Clinton Took The Private Jet Shortly After Rolling Out Her Green Energy Plan And Painting Herself As A Climate "Crusader." "Hillary Clinton portrayed herself as a crusader against climate change Monday, making a moral push for the importance of renewable energy production. Then she glided onto a private jet that burns 387 gallons of fossil fuel an hour, touching down in New Hampshire for another campaign event." (Tony Dokoupil, "Clinton Campaign Goes 'Carbon Neutral,'" MSNBC , 7/28/15)

Clinton's Round-Trip Flight Created 38 Metric Tons Of Carbon Emissions. "The plane that Clinton reportedly flew from Iowa to New Hampshire earlier this week burns 347 gallons of fuel per hour. A round-trip flight from New York city to Des Moines, Iowa on that plane would burn roughly 38 metric tons of carbon emissions and cost around $185 for bulk purchases of carbon offsets, according to Native Energy's Stoddard." (Clare Foran and Ben Geman, "Can Hillary Clinton Make Her 2016 Bid Carbon Neutral?," The National Journal, 7/29/15)

Clinton Is A Private Jet Frequent Flier Going Back To Her Time As A Senator. " As a senator, Clinton took more than 200 privately chartered flights and for much of 2013 and 2014, she zipped around the country during her book tour and paid time on the speaking circuit in private planes." (Dan Merica, "First On CNN: Clinton Campaign Pledges To Be Carbon Neutral, Aide Says," CNN, 7/8/15)

But Clinton Has Broken Her Pledge And Taken No Action To Make Her Campaign Carbon Neutral

According To The Clinton Campaign's 2015 Year-End Report, Hillary For America Spent $0 To Offset Its Carbon Footprint. (Hillary For America, 2015 Year-End Report, Federal Election Commission , Filed 01/31/16)

In Contrast, Clinton's Campaign Paid Over $900,000 Last Year To Executive Fliteways, A Private Jet Company. (Hillary For America, 2015 Year-End Report, Federal Election Commission , Filed 01/31/16)

  • Nearly $560,000 Of This Came In The Third Quarter Of 2015, After Clinton Had Issued Her Carbon Neutral Pledge. "Democrat Hillary Clinton's campaign shelled out nearly $560,000 to Executive Fliteways a private charter company that has bases at multiple New York airports. While the number isn't huge compared to her giant fundraising haul and $33 million in cash on hand, Clinton's rate of spending could be a concern over the long-haul, according to a POLITICO analysis of the numbers." (Eliza Collins, "High-Flying Campaigns Can't Give Up Charter Jets," Politico, 10/16/15)

To Date, There Is "No Evidence" That Clinton's Campaign Has Followed Up On Her Pledge From Last Year To Go Carbon Neutral, "Opening Her To Charges Of Hypocrisy." "An aide at the time promised CNN that Mrs. Clinton would soon detail specifics on how she would offset her carbon footprint saying it would be part of a broader global warming plan. More than six months later, there is no evidence that she has lived up to that pledge - opening her to charges of hypocrisy." (Stephen Dinan, "Bernie Sanders Goes Carbon-Neutral As Hillary Clinton Breaks Pledge," The Washington Times, 2/14/16)

When Asked Last October About The Campaign's Inaction, Clinton Aides Did Not Deny That The Campaign Had Failed To Go Carbon Neutral. "Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign pledged that they would be carbon neutral back in July. But, to date, they have failed to live up to that promise. There are no records of the Clinton campaign purchasing carbon offsets in their latest Federal Election Commission reports released earlier this month and, when asked, multiple campaign aides did not refute CNN's reporting that offsets have yet to be purchased." (Dan Merica, "Hillary Clinton's Campaign Is Not Yet Carbon Neutral, Despite Pledge," CNN, 10/26/15)

"Talk Is Cheap, But Offsets Are Expensive," Said Dan Kish, Senior Vice President For Policy At The Institute For Energy Research. "It's Easy To Say Things If You Don't Have To Pay For Them." (Stephen Dinan, "Bernie Sanders Goes Carbon-Neutral As Hillary Clinton Breaks Pledge,"The Washington Times, 2/14/16)

Clinton's Campaign Has Refused To Respond To Any Inquiries About Her Carbon Neutral Pledge

Clinton's Campaign Has Refused To Answer Questions From Reporters About Her Broken Carbon Pledge. "Mrs. Clinton's campaign failed to respond to repeated messages seeking comment on the status of her pledge, which she made in July just after she was spotted boarding a private plane. She had just announced an outline of her plans to combat climate change." (Stephen Dinan, "Bernie Sanders Goes Carbon-Neutral As Hillary Clinton Breaks Pledge," The Washington Times, 2/14/16)

The Clinton Campaign Has Ignored Native Energy's Offers To Once Again Provide Carbon Offsets For Her 2016 Run. "Native Energy said it has tried to connect with Mrs. Clinton's campaign about offsets this year but hasn't heard anything from her." (Stephen Dinan, "Bernie Sanders Goes Carbon-Neutral As Hillary Clinton Breaks Pledge,"The Washington Times, 2/14/16)

  • Clinton's 2008 Campaign Paid Native Energy, A Vermont-Based Firm, Over $80,000 To Track The Campaign's Carbon Footprint. "In 2007, Clinton's presidential campaign pledged to neutralize its carbon footprint, and paid out over $80,000 to Vermont-based firm Native Energy over the course of 2007 and 2008, Federal Election Commission filings indicate." (Clare Foran and Ben Geman, "Can Hillary Clinton Make Her 2016 Bid Carbon-Neutral?" The National Journal , 7/29/15)
  • At The Time, Clinton Said "In Order To Address The Climate Crisis, We All Must Act -- And That Includes Our Campaign." "'In order to address the climate crisis, we all must act -- and that includes our campaign,' Clinton said. 'As a nation, it is past time that we met this challenge head-on by increasing energy efficiency and investments in clean and renewable energy. If we do nothing, the planet will continue to warm over the next century, with widespread and potentially devastating effects.'" (Hillary Clinton For President, "Effort To Curb Global Warming Will Offset Emissions From Office, Travel," Press Release, 4/20/07)

The Clinton Campaign Has Also Refused To Respond To A Non-Profit Carbon Offset Provider That Partners With The Clinton Foundation. "'[Carbon Offsets to Alleviate Poverty] has reached out to the campaign regarding its carbon-neutral pledge, and we have not heard from them yet,' [founder and CEO Tim] Whitley said." (Stephen Dinan, "Bernie Sanders Goes Carbon-Neutral As Hillary Clinton Breaks Pledge," The Washington Times, 2/14/16)
