Dear Debbie Stabenow: Don’t Put #Resistance First On Infrastructure

Ellie Hockenbury - February 23, 2018

Last week, President Trump announced his long-term plan to improve the nation’s crumbling infrastructure with a focus on improving rural communities. Debbie Stabenow has acknowledged the need for a bipartisan, long-term legislative solution on this important issue in the past, but has spent the majority of President Trump’s term obstructing any real bipartisan legislative fixes by playing partisan games.

Debbie Stabenow has agreed that investments in water infrastructure and broadband are important for rural Michiganders. So will Stabenow finally work with President Trump and Congress to deliver another win for the American people? Or will she continue partisan games at her constituents’ expense?

Red State Democrats Have Claimed They Are "Ready And Willing" To Work With President Trump To Rebuild America's Infrastructure

In June 2017, Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) Announced That She "Intend[ed] To Work With President Trump And His Administration On An Infrastructure Plan" To Help The State Of Michigan. "U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) released a statement following a speech by President Trump today discussing his infrastructure proposal: 'I intend to work with President Trump and his Administration on an infrastructure plan that benefits people in Michigan and across the country. It is so important to Michigan that we upgrade our aging Soo Locks and our Great Lakes harbors. We must also provide our small towns and rural communities with the tools they need to succeed, like improved water and sewer systems, broadband access and telemedicine." (Press Release, "Stabenow Statement on President Trump's Infrastructure Proposal," Sen. Debbie Stabenow , 6/7/17)

(Will Craft, "More Than 500 Infrastructure Projects Are Pitched To Trump, Who Will Favor Private Money And Speed," APM , 5/11/17)

  • In 2018, Senator Stabenow Claimed The Additional Funds For The Soo Locks Could "Provide An Economic Benefit Of More Than $1.7 Billion." "According to a recent study by the Department of Treasury, a $600 million investment to modernize the Soo Locks could provide an economic benefit of more than $1.7 billion. At the same time, funding is needed to dredge Michigan's shallow-draft harbors that are critical to recreational navigation, public safety, and the economies of Michigan's local communities." (Sen. Debbie Stabenow, Letter To President Donald Trump , 1/29/18)

Quality infrastructure is integral to Michigan’s rural communities and economy. Tell Debbie Stabenow to stand with President Trump and the GOP-led Congress to provide quality of life improvements for Michiganders.
