DNC Platform Committee Member: No One Should Have A Gun

- June 8, 2016

DNC Platform Committee Member Bonnie Schaefer Does Not Think "Anyone Should Have A Gun." SCHAEFER: "I do believe that you're absolutely correct - not just keeping the guns out of mentally ill people and criminals, but I really don't personally think anyone should have a gun. I mean, that's just my own philosophy. Nothing is ever solved when you have a gun in your hand except the worst possible scenario." (DNC Platform Committee Meeting, Washington DC, 6/8/16)

Schaefer Was Appointed To The Platform Committee By Debbie Wasserman Schultz And Is A Maxed Out Donor To The Clinton Campaign

Schaefer Was Appointed To The Platform Committee By Debbie Wasserman Schultz. "In 2008, during the last contested Democratic primary, eventual nominee Barack Obama chose all the members of the party's platform committee, which sets policy priorities at the convention. … Wasserman Schultz's picks were Elijah E. Cummings, the Democratic congressman from Maryland who will head the committee; Rep. Barbara Lee of Oakland; Howard Berman, a former California congressman; and Bonnie Schaefer, a business executive and philanthropist." Earlier This Week, Clinton Declined To Say Whether She Believes In A Constitutional Right To Bear Arms

FLASHBACK: On Sunday Clinton "Declined To Say … Whether She Believes In A Constitutional Right To Bear Arms." "Hillary Clinton declined to say Sunday whether she believes in a constitutional right to bear arms, possibly opening the door to a fresh round of attacks from Donald Trump, who has already accused the likely Democratic presidential nominee of wanting to "abolish" the Second Amendment." (Callum Borchers, "Hillary Clinton Wavers On Second Amendment Right To Bear Arms," The Washington Post , 6/5/16)

Clinton: If The Right To Bear Arms "Is A Constitutional Right, Then It, Like Every Other Constitutional Right, Is Subject To Reasonable Regulations." ABC’S GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS “Do you believe that an individual’s right to bear arms is a constitutional right, that it’s not linked to service in a militia?” CLINTON: “I think that for most of our history, there was a nuanced reading of the Second Amendment until the decision by the late Justice Scalia, and there was no argument until then that localities and states and the federal government had a right, as we do with every amendment, to impose reasonable regulations. So I believe we can have common-sense gun safety measures consistent with the Second Amendment. And in fact what I have proposed is supported by 90% of the American people and more than 75% of responsible gun owners. So that is exactly what I think is constitutionally permissible and once again you have Donald Trump just making outright fabrications of accusing me of something that is absolutely untrue. I’m going to continue to speak out for comprehensive background checks, closing the gun show loop hole, closing the online loophole, closing the so-called Charleston loophole, reversing the bill Senator Sanders voted for and I voted against giving immunity from liability to gun makers and sellers. I think all of that can and should be done and it is in my view consistent with the constitution. STEPHANOPOULOS: “And the Heller decision also does say there can be some restrictions, but that’s not what I asked. I said, do you believe that their conclusion that an individual’s right to bear arms is a constitutional right?” CLINTON: “If it is a constitutional right, then it, like every other constitutional right, is subject to reasonable regulations, and what people have done with that decision is to take it as far as they possibly can and reject what has been our history from the very beginning of the republic, where some of the earliest laws that were passed were about firearms,” (ABC’s This Week, 6/5/16)
