Earth to Jan Schakowsky

RNC Communications - August 4, 2011

Apparently Illinois’ dismal economy and President Obama’s failed economic policies have Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and the Democratic Party a bit flustered. It’s understandable considering the president’s home state has lost 91,200 jobs since the stimulus passed but that’s no excuse to hastily issue a statement riddled with inaccuracies.  Since she even confuses IL GOP Chairman Pat Brady with state Sen. Bill Brady in her statement –  here are a few facts to help bring Congresswoman Schakowsky and the Democratic National Committee back to reality.

RHETORIC: STIMULUS CREATED 150,000 JOBS IN ILLINOIS

Here in Illinois we have benefited from a myriad of initiatives from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which has created nearly 150,000 jobs in our state. (DNC: Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky Responds to GOP's Baseless Attack on Illinois and the President, Press Release, 8/3/11)

REALITY: 91,200 JOBS LOST

RHETORIC: WE'VE SEEN SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS OVER THE PAST TWO AND A HALF MONTHS

Folks in Illinois and across the country are still hurting, but we've seen significant progress over the past two and a half months, thanks to the policies and leadership of President Obama. (DNC: Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky Responds to GOP's Baseless Attack on Illinois and the President, Press Release, 8/3/11)

REALITY: JOBS AND BUSINESSES LEAVING ILLINOIS

In June, Illinois Lost 7,200 Jobs And The Unemployment Rate Rose From 8.9 Percent To 9.2 Percent.  (Bureau Of Labor Statistics, BLS.gov, Accessed 7/22/11)

A Crystal Lake, Ill., metal fabrication company is moving its operations to Kenosha County to be closer to its primary business partner, which itself moved to Wisconsin from Illinois. (Don Walker, “Illinois metal-fabrication firm moving to Pleasant Prairie,” Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 7/18/11)

Special Metals Corporation, an inventor and producer of high-nickel, high-performance engineering alloys, will relocate its operations from Illinois to Indiana, creating up to 100 new jobs by 2014. (“Special Metals Corporation Moves from Illinois to Indiana,” mfrtch.com, 7/17/11)
