FACT CHECK: Clinton Says She Will “Stand Up” To Citizens United

- October 19, 2016

Tonight, Clinton Said She Would Stand Up To Citizens United, Because It Lets “Unaccountable Money To Come Into Our Electoral System. CLINTON: “Thank you very much, Chris. Thanks to UNLV for hosting us. I think when we talk about the Supreme Court it really raises the central issue in this election. Namely what kind of country we going to be? What kind of opportunities will we provide for our citizens, what kind of rights will Americans have. And I feel strongly that the Supreme Court needs to stand on the side of the American people. Not on the side of the powerful corporations and the wealthy. For me, that means that we need a supreme court that will stand up on behalf of women's rights, on behalf of the rights of the LGBT community. That will stand up and say no to Citizens United, a decision that has undermined the election system in our country because of the way it permits dark, unaccountable money to come in to our electoral system. I have major disagrees with my opponent about these issues and others that will be before the Supreme Court. But I feel that at this point in our country's history, it is important that we not reverse marriage equality, that we not reverse Roe vs. Wade. That we stand up against Citizens United. We stand up for the rights of people in the workplace that we stand up and basically say the Supreme Court should represent all of us. that's how I see the court and the kind of people that I would be looking to nominate to the court. Would be in the great tradition of standing up to the powerful, standing up on behalf of our rights as Americans. And I look forward to having that opportunity. I would hope that the senate would do its job and confirm the nominee that President Obama to them. That's the way the constitution fundamentally should operate. The president nominates and then the senate advises and consents or not, but they go forward with the process.” (Hillary Clinton, Presidential Debate, University of Nevada Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NV, 10/19/16)

Clinton Not Only Takes Advantage Of The Loosened Campaign Finance Rules, The Campaign Is Pushing The Boundaries Of The Rules

Clinton Has Been “Seizing On Rules Loosened By The Supreme Court” When It Comes To Campaign Finance. “The early, expansive use of a jumbo-sized joint fundraising committee shows how the Clinton campaign has worked to maximize donations from wealthy supporters, seizing on rules loosened by the Supreme Court.” (Tom Hamburger And Matea Gold, “Democratic Fundraising Effort Helps Clinton Find New Donors, Too,” The Washington Post, 2/19/16)

Leaked Emails Reveal “Consistent, Repeated Efforts By The Clinton Campaign To Collaborate With Super PACs On Strategy, Research, Attacks On Political Adversaries And Fundraising.” “The emails show consistent, repeated efforts by the Clinton campaign to collaborate with Super PACs on strategy, research, attacks on political adversaries and fundraising.” (Lee Fang and Andrew Perez, “Hacked Emails Prove Coordination Between Clinton Campaign And Super PACs,” The Intercept, 10/18/16)

Clinton’s Campaign Officials And Priorities USA Have Had Meetings And Help Each Other With Fundraising. “The cache also reveal meetings between the campaign and Priorities USA Action, and that campaign officials have helped with the group’s fundraising.” (Lee Fang and Andrew Perez, “Hacked Emails Prove Coordination Between Clinton Campaign And Super PACs,” The Intercept, 10/18/16)

Super PACs Are A Direct Result Of Citizens United, But The Super PACs And The Campaign Committees Are To Have “Strict Firewalls…” “Super PACs, known technically as ‘Independent Expenditure-Only Political Committees,’ are a direct result of the Citizens United court decision. Justice Anthony Kennedy, the author of the decision, proclaimed that deregulating outside money would have no corrupting effect upon candidates because there would be strict firewalls between candidates and outside groups.” (Lee Fang and Andrew Perez, “Hacked Emails Prove Coordination Between Clinton Campaign And Super PACs,” The Intercept, 10/18/16)
