Foreign Hackers Attempted To Infiltrate Clinton’s Email

- October 11, 2015

After Clinton Left The State Department, Her Emails Were The Subjected To “Cyberattacks Originating In China, South Korea And Germany.” “Hillary Rodham Clinton's private email server, which stored some 55,000 pages of emails from her time as secretary of state, was the subject of attempted cyberattacks originating in China, South Korea and Germany after she left office in early 2013, according to a congressional document obtained by The Associated Press.” (Ken Dilanian, Jack Gillum, and Stephen Braun, “Clinton Subject To Hack Attempts From China, Korea, Germany,” The Associated Press, 10/7/15)

  • The Associated Press Headline: “Clinton Subject To Hack Attempts From China, Korea, Germany” (Ken Dilanian, Jack Gillum, and Stephen Braun, “Clinton Subject To Hack Attempts From China, Korea, Germany,” The Associated Press, 10/7/15)

“Russia-Linked Hackers Tried At Least Five Times To Pry Into Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Private Email Account While She Was Secretary Of State …” “Russia-linked hackers tried at least five times to pry into Hillary Rodham Clinton’s private email account while she was secretary of state, emails released Wednesday show. It is unclear if she clicked on any attachments and exposed her account. Clinton received the infected emails, disguised as speeding tickets from New York, over four hours early the morning of Aug. 3, 2011. The emails instructed recipients to print the attached tickets. Opening an attachment would have allowed hackers to take over control of a victim’s computer.” (Bradley Klapper, Jack Gillum and Stephen Braun, “Emails: Russia-Linked Hackers Tried To Access Clinton Server,” The Associated Press, 9/30/15)

In 2011, NBC News Warned That A Fake Email Scam Was Circulating Claiming To Be From New York State About A “Uniform Traffic Ticket” And Told The User To Download An Attached File.  “Email con artists are hoping you’ll put the brakes on for their latest scam. Researchers at the security firm Sophos came across an email campaign informing recipients that they’ve incurred a ‘Uniform Traffic Ticket’ from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for speeding on July 5 at 7:25 a.m. But the message appears to come from an @nyc.gov email address, which gives it at least a hint of credibility and could potentially scare victims into following its orders to open and print out the attached .zip file and mail it to ‘Town Court, Chatam Hall.’” (Matt Liebowitz, “Motorists: Beware Fake Traffic Ticket Email Scam,” NBC News, 8/17/11)

  • But The Attached File Actually Contained A Trojan Horse That Would Allow The Hackers To Access The Users Computer. “The attachment, like so many other online scams, contains a Trojan horse, identified as ‘Troj/Invo-Zip’ that could allow attackers access to your Windows system and give them the ability to drop more malicious files on it.” (Matt Liebowitz, “Motorists: Beware Fake Traffic Ticket Email Scam,” NBC News, 8/17/11)

Clinton “Circumvented Millions Of Dollars” Worth Of Cybersecurity The State Department Is Equipped With, According To An Expert. “Clinton ‘essentially circumvented millions of dollars' worth of cybersecurity investment that the federal government puts within the State Department,’ said Justin Harvey, chief security officer of Fidelis Cybersecurity.” (Ken Dilanian, Jack Gillum, and Stephen Braun, “Clinton Subject To Hack Attempts From China, Korea, Germany,” The Associated Press, 10/7/15)
