Gun Rights Champion Howard Dean Speaks On Same Night As Anti-Gun Activists

- July 26, 2016

Tonight The "Mothers Of The Movement," A Group Of Seven Mothers Who Lost Their Children To Gun Violence, Will Speak At The Democratic Convention. "Seven mothers united in grief over losing their children to gun violence or excessive use of force by police will put their message in the spotlight tonight when they deliver a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. The group of mothers known as the 'Mothers of the Movement' include Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, who was shot while walking in his neighborhood in 2012, and Lezley McSpadden, the mother of Michael Brown, whose death in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014 at the hands of a police officer set off nationwide protests." (Katie Kindelan, "'Mothers Of The Movement' Speak Out On Democratic National Convention Speech," ABC News, 7/26/16)

Dean Was Known For His Support Of Gun Rights As Governor Of Vermont, Earning High NRA Grades

In 1992, Dean Said He "Opposed Any Restrictions On Private Ownership Of Assault Weapons." "Back when Howard Dean was running for governor of Vermont in 1992, he told the National Rifle Association in a signed questionnaire that he opposed any restrictions on private ownership of assault weapons." (Adam Nagourney And Jodi Wilgoren, "Dean Walks A Tightrope Over Positions On Gun Control," The New York Times, 10/31/03)

In 1992 Dean Said He Opposed "State Legislation To Impose A Waiting Period For Buying Handguns." "But he appears to have taken another position in 1992, when he was seeking the N.R.A.'s support of his run for governor. On question after question posed by the rifle association, he voiced opposition to various gun control measures, including state legislation to impose a waiting period for buying handguns." (Adam Nagourney And Jodi Wilgoren, "Dean Walks A Tightrope Over Positions On Gun Control," The New York Times, 10/31/03)

The NRA "Gave Dr. Dean Its Highest Possible Rating Throughout His 12-Year Career As Governor." "The N.R.A., which gave Dr. Dean its highest possible rating throughout his 12-year career as governor, declined to provide copies of the questionnaires he had filled out over the years." (Adam Nagourney And Jodi Wilgoren, "Dean Walks A Tightrope Over Positions On Gun Control," The New York Times, 10/31/03)

In November 2003 Dean Said Democrats Had To Appeal To "White Guys Riding Around With Confederate Flags In The Back Of Their Pickup Trucks." "No one accused Howard Dean of whistling Dixie in February when he tried to appeal to Southern white men or to Southern black people about Southern white men. 'You know all those white guys riding around with Confederate flags in the back of their pickup trucks? Well, their kids don't have health insurance either.'" (Derrick Z. Jackson, "Dean's Appeal To South Cuts Across Race," Boston Globe , 11/7/03)

FLASHBACK: Clinton Blamed Dean's Native Vermont For Gun Violence And Death In New York State

In April Clinton Attacked Sanders On Gun Control, Saying Vermont Was The Highest Out-Of-State Source Of Guns That Were Used In New York Violence. "Hillary Clinton claimed that Vermont was the source of the 'highest per capita' number of guns that come from out of state and were 'used in crimes and violence and killings in New York.'"
