U.S. Rep Bill Johnson (OH-6)
“I am very honored to report to you that I voted in support yesterday for the middle class tax relief and job creation act
“I think that it is a very important piece of legislation especially given where we are in the Obama economy right now.
“The last thing that we wanted to see happen was for hard working Americans, hard working Ohioans taking home less in their paychecks, as a result of the irresponsible policies of this administration.
“We passed that bill yesterday with bipartisan support and guess what, it’s paid for. For the first time in our nation’s history, that I am aware of , we actually pay for this with about $183 billion in associated cuts, that will not only make sure that Americans keep the money that’s coming in their paychecks, that protects seniors and their access to healthcare, and gets our economy going by creating jobs with the XL Pipeline.”
OH GOP Chairman Kevin DeWine
“Last night under the guidance of Speaker John Boehner, the US House passed the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act—a bipartisan bill—that includes previously supported initiatives from the president, from other Democrats and the economic plan from Republicans. Now this critical piece of legislation…is going to help create jobs, it’s going to protect Social Security and rightfully extend the payroll tax break and unemployment insurance for millions of Americans.
“Most importantly, this bill…according to the CBO, each of these components in the Act are paid for and are offset by spending cuts as opposed to the tax hikes proposed by Barack Obama and Senate Democrats like Sherrod Brown. Speaker Boehner and House Republicans like Congressman Johnson and a few Democrats who supported the bill deserve credit. They deserve credit for taking a major step forward to end Washington’s reckless deficit spending binge—a practice that was supported previously by Nancy Pelosi and here reliable allies like Congressman Charlie Wilson.
“Despite the delusional assertions by the DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the unemployment rate here in Ohio and across America…has increased since Obama took office. And our economy remains in a very fragile state.
“It has been nearly a thousand days since Sherrod Brown and his fellow Democrats, who run the Senate, passed a budget. They must not evade that responsibility to govern. They must act and they must act right now. Threatening to shut down the government in an attempt to hold bipartisan legislation is irresponsible. The time for legislative hijinks and hyperbole is over.
“Sherrod Brown and Senate Democrats must work to stop a tax increase for the middle class. We’re proud of folks like Congressman Bill Johnson who have done their part to protect workers and seniors. If Sherrod Brown doesn’t want to pass a payroll tax cut bill he will fail Ohio families and the American people. And if the Senate Democrats do not finance this measure through appropriate spending cuts they will, once again, choose to pass the burden of today’s debt onto future generations.”
