When it comes to Clinton’s growing email scandal, Hillary has no one to blame but herself. Her reckless practices risked national security and shielded her public records from scrutiny. But, instead of being straightforward, Hillary continually resorted to the classic Clinton playbook: duck, dodge, and deny.
Along the way, Hillary and her team have relied on a series of empty excuses, red herring’s, and flat out deceptions that defy comprehension. Here are some of the greatest hits:
When it was first uncovered that Hillary exclusively used a private email server for all official business while serving as Secretary of State, Clinton offered as a rationale the “convenience” of using one device.
“When I got to work as secretary of state, I opted for convenience to use my personal email account, which was allowed by the State Department, because I thought it would be easier to carry just one device for my work and for my personal emails instead of two.”
This excuse was quickly refuted when video surfaced of Hillary bragging about her proficient use of multiple devices. Emails also reveal that Hillary used an iPad in addition to her Blackberry while serving as Secretary of State.
The Rules Permitted It
Clinton has continued peddling the falsehood that “what I did was allowed.” Her campaign has likewise repeated the claim stating, “The rules of the State Department permitted it.”
But Hillary is in violation of the rules on several fronts.
First, regulations require that federal records, including email communications, be maintained in the agency’s official record-keeping system. To that issue, a federal judge stated that Clinton’s practices “violated government policy by storing official messages on a private server when she worked as Secretary of State.”
Second, Clinton was obligated to turn over her business-related emails before she departed State in 2013. However, Clinton failed to turn over emails until December 2014, and only upon specific request from the State Department.
Most importantly, Hillary’s mishandling of classified information on her secret server brings up national security issues far beyond federal record keeping. Independent intelligence watchdogs have flagged hundreds of Hillary’s emails for classified material, and at least two have been designated “top-secret.” The FBI is also conducting their own “serious investigation” into information on Hillary Clinton’s servers.
The Rules Are Dumb
In a uniquely Clintonian fashion, Hillary has taken to blaming the rules themselves for her email scandal.
The problem isn’t that Hillary did anything wrong or that she risked national security by sending and receiving classified information on her secret off-the-books email server. The “real scandal” is “our ridiculous classification rules.”
Hillary has likewise dismissed serious investigations into her practices as a bureaucratic scuffle:
“It's the process by which the government -- and sometimes in disagreements between various agencies of the government, make decisions about what can and can't be disclosed.”
That Hillary would go to such extensive lengths to avoid taking accountability for her actions is alone absurd. Her tortured rationale also happens to be false.
A series of executive orders and State Department regulations clearly designate communications with foreign governments as “presumed” classified, meaning they are classified by their very nature, not their marking. Recent reports show that at least 30 email threads on Hillary Clinton’s secret server contained such information, Clinton herself sending at least 17 of these emails.
Someone who is “well aware of the classification rules” should be extremely sensitive to these issues.
“I Didn’t Really Stop and Think” About My Email System
In a stunning statement, Hillary Clinton attempted to diffuse questions about her emails by playing the fool.
“I didn’t really stop and think what kind of email system will there be?” Clinton said
But as The Washington Post noted, Clinton and her family personally paid a State Department staffer on the side (who has since pled the fifth) to maintain her secret email server. It looks like Clinton did in fact put a good deal of thought into her unprecedented email arrangement, which gave her total control over what gets released under government transparency laws and what doesn’t.
This Is All Just “Partisan Games”
Hillary’s favorite tactic is to make her actions about “Republicans vs. Democrats.” But the simple fact is, Hillary’s growing email scandal is all about her reckless decisions and deceptions.
“I won’t pretend that this is anything other than what it is – the same old partisan games we’ve seen so many times before,” Clinton has said.
Two independent inspector generals, the Department of Justice, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are playing partisan games?
As Clinton struggles with the truth, we understand why she would want to shift to an arena she is more comfortable with.
After all, when it comes to playing political games, the Clintons are all-stars.
