ICYMI: Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) Has A Record Of Criticizing Obama Policies

RNC Communications - September 5, 2012

Rep. Cleaver Said That There Isn't A Republican "War On Women":

When Asked If Alleging There Was A Republican War On Women Was Wrong, Rep. Cleaver Said "I Condemn It. If It's A Democrat, If It's My Cousin, It's Wrong. And I Think We Need To Stop That." CNN'S RALPH REED: "So is it -- Congressman, is it similarly wrong, then, for Democrats to say that the Republican Party is engaged in a war on women? Is that wrong?" REP. EMANUEL CLEAVER:"Yes, that is wrong. And I've never said it, not one time." REED: "Ok, well, then perhaps we could - " CLEAVER: "Mr. Reed, what we need -- what we need is for you and me, and I'm willing to do it, I don't think you would, but when that happens, do what I do. I condemn it. If it's a Democrat, if it's my cousin, it's wrong. And I think we need to stop that. It is damaging the body politic and it's further separating the people in this country." (CNN's "State Of The Union," 4/8/12)

Rep. Cleaver Called Obama's Deal On The Debt Ceiling A "Sugar-Coated Satan Sandwich":

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO): "This Deal Is A Sugar-Coated Satan Sandwich. If You Lift The Bun, You Will Not Like What You See." (Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, Twitter Feed, 8/1/11)

  • Cleaver: "Democrats Got Nothing In This Deal, And If We Did, Someone Please Show It To Me." (Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, Twitter Feed, 8/1/11)

Rep. Cleaver Called Obama's Budget "A Nervous Breakdown On Paper":

Rep. Cleaver: "This Budget Is A Nervous Breakdown On Paper." "Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.), the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, warned Monday that the federal government should be weary of slashing spending too drastically as he called President Barack Obama's expected budget proposal a 'nervous breakdown on paper.' 'This budget is a nervous breakdown on paper,' Cleaver said on CNN." (MJ Lee, "Cleaver: Budget Is 'Nervous Breakdown,'" Politico, 2/13/12)

Rep. Cleaver Has Been Critical Of The High African American Unemployment Rate Under Obama:

Rep. Cleaver On The High Rate Of African American Unemployment: "Can You Imagine A Situation Where Any Other Group Of Workers, If 34 Percent Of White Women Were Out There Looking For Work And Couldn't Find It?" "'Can you imagine a situation where any other group of workers, if 34 percent of white women were out there looking for work and couldn't find it?' asked Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Missouri Democrat and chairman of the caucus. 'You would see congressional hearings and community gatherings. There would be rallies and protest marches. There is no way that this would be allowed to stand.'" (Janell Ross, "Congressional Black Caucus Members Criticize Obama On Unemployment," The Huffington Post, 7/7/11)

  • Cleaver: "What The President Is Doing Is Not The Same As What We're Doing … We Have Real Jobs To Give Real People Who Are Unemployed." "'What the President is doing is not the same as what we're doing . . . We have real jobs to give real people who are unemployed,' said Caucus Chairman Emanuel Cleaver II (D-MO.) 'This is not one of those deals where we go around and talk about jobs and hope somebody gives us some press attention.'" (Ylan Mui, "Lack Of Jobs For Blacks Creates Tension Between Black Lawmakers And Obama," The Washington Post , 8/7/11)

Cleaver Said "I'm Frustrated With The President …" "The Congressional Black Caucus organized a town hall gathering in Miami to address black unemployment rates Monday evening, one of five taking place in August in distressed communities across the country. At issue is the stubbornly high unemployment rate in the black community, now at 16.8 percent nationwide, more than double that for whites. Chairman Emanuel Cleaver said representatives are frustrated at being unable to advance bills in Congress aimed at encouraging job growth. Caucus members have introduced more than 40 such bills since January and none of them have passed…'I'm frustrated with the president, but I'm frustrated with me,' Cleaver said in an interview Monday. 'I'm frustrated with the tea party. Maybe I should have used my communications skills better to try to convince some of them to work with us. I'm frustrated with the Democratic leadership. The Republican leadership. The president. I think all of us bear some responsibility, some more than others, however.'" (Christine Armario, "Town Hall In Miami: High Black Unemployment In U.S.," The Associated Press, 8/23/11)

  • Cleaver: If Obama Wasn't President, The CBC "Would Be Marching On The White House" Over The High Black Unemployment Rate. "'If [former President] Bill Clinton had been in the White House and had failed to address this problem, we probably would be marching on the White House,' Cleaver told 'The Miami Herald' in comments published Sunday. 'There is a less-volatile reaction in the CBC because nobody wants to do anything that would empower the people who hate the president.' CBC members have expressed concern in recent months as the unemployment rate has continued to rise amongst African-Americans, pushing for Obama to do more to address the needs of vulnerable communities." (Alicia M. Cohn, "Cleaver: If Obama Wasn't President, We Would Be 'Marching On The White House'," The Hill's " Blog Briefing Room ," 9/18/11)
