In TV Interview, Obama Challenged About Local Defense Cut In Pennsylvania

Last Night, President Obama Was Questioned About Air Force Plans To Close Pennsylvania’s 911th Airlift Wing:

KDKA Anchor: “Tonight, President Obama is responding to plans to close the 911th Air lift in Moon. The Air Force is phasing out the C-130 program, effectively closing that base in Moon. Local lawmakers have been fighting to keep it open, arguing the 911th outperformed bases not slated for closure. In a one-on-one interview with KDKA Political Editor John Delano today, the President says when it comes to military budgets, tough decisions have to be made.”

President Obama: “We are not going to be making any of the decisions either in isolation or casually.”

Delano: “So it’s not a done deal?”

President Obama: “Well, you know, nothing is ever a done deal when it comes to our military budgets. But what I do think is important for people to recognize though is that if we are going to reduce the deficit in a serious way, then that means that we’ve got to make some very tough choices.” (KDKA-Pitt’s “News At 11,” 3/12/12)

The Closure, In Compliance With Obama’s FY2013 Budget, Would Result In The Elimination Of Over 1,400 Local Personnel:

“The 911th Air Wing At Pittsburgh International Airport Is Scheduled To Close Entirely And Lose 1,451 Positions...” “The 911th Air Wing at Pittsburgh International Airport is scheduled to close entirely and lose 1,451 positions, and the 171st Air Refueling Wing there would lose about 182 positions… Sens. Bob Casey and Pat Toomey, U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Allegheny, and other members of Congress are asking the Air Force to delay or limit the cuts, most of which are scheduled for 2013.” (“Air Force Cutting 97 Jobs At Johnstown Airport,” The Associated Press, 3/6/12)

“Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz Said The Nationwide Cuts Were Necessary To Comply With The Obama Administration’s Fiscal 2013 Budget Request.” (“Air Force Cutting 97 Jobs At Johnstown Airport,” The Associated Press, 3/6/12)

Pennsylvania Lawmakers “Fed Up,” Questioning Decision, Asking Obama To Intervene:

“Fed Up” With Waiting For The Air Force To Explain Reasoning In Base Closures, Pennsylvania Leaders Asked President Obama To Intervene In The Process. “Fed up with waiting for the Air Force to explain its reasons for planning to close the 911th Airlift Wing in Moon Township, area leaders are going over the agency’s head to President Barack Obama. In the meantime, area federal legislators have signed a letter being sent to the president asking him to intervene in the process.” (Patrick O’Shea, “Leaders Ask Obama To Intervene In 911th Closing,” Beaver County Times, 3/10/12)

“Sen. Bob Casey, D-Scranton, Questioned The Air Force's Move To Close The 911th Airlift Wing While Continuing To Maintain 65 Air Force Golf Courses Throughout The World, According To A Statement From His Office.” (Jenna Staul, “Sen. Casey: Air Force Should Close Golf Courses Before 911th Airlift Wing,” MoonPatch, 3/5/12)

  • Casey: “When You Have 65 Golf Courses Around The World That The Air Force Has, They Should Start Looking At Places Like That For Some Savings.” (“Sen. Casey: Air Force should Look At Golf Courses For Savings,” WTAE 4, 3/2/12)
